Hello, just joined, Travis Hutchins referred me here. I am a big trance guy, but I have always wanted to make DnB too. I have given a few shots, never too good. I understand the bass and how to make the usual bassline but I can't seem to grasp the drums. I want to make darker techstep stuff. Is there anyone that can help me, tell me the basis of the beats, what kind of kicks and hats. I have been experimenting for a few days, figured out some DnB beat, but isn't really dark, sounds too classic if you know what I mean. I have checked the knowledge base, I definitely found some useful stuff, but not pertaining to what I am doing.
hello mate, well in "Drum n Bass" you will find that "Drums" and "Bass" will probably be the hardest elements to master
particualry on the drums theres no simple solution, it requires a lot of "feel" so practice makes perfect
I also recomend you start putting your WIPs up on this site, feedback may appear harsh but its always constructive, its probably a better way of going about it as people can point out what areas in partuicular u need to improve on
peace

Well that would be Timmi Two's (Squarehead's) department.

I see you trying to cross people over ya sneaky bugger !

yeah well no matter what kinda dnb u wanna make u still need to follow some basic guidleines
so if ur talking specific to techstep / darkstep then i suggest you just really focus on getting a large bank of samples together and pick n choose the ones that fit the vibe that ur going for
anyways, i have dark / tech influences in my tunes (just not too extreme
) and it works for me...
I know Squarehead (darkstep producer Sentinel is chatting about) uses a fair bit of distortion on his drums (which i don't do much so can't comment any further)
Thanks guys, I started a new track and got a decent beat going with a pretty good bassline, maybe I will upload it today. I am getting those samples now and off to check out those guides you referred me to.
Don't upload track after track so close together like your mate The Refill maker "Travis" aye ...
Won't get as many reviews that way as people will tend to not bother listening to them if they didn't like your first uploaded tune so much they'll tend to think all the batch is roughly the same.
