hi there
yeah got that old skool feel with the synth (preset u were talkin about? actually fits the old skool tip as they used to use more basic sounds back then samples etc etc)
overall mixdown sounds a bit muffled all the sounds need to be brought out more and i think u need more elements esp fx maybe pads to fill it out, sounds a bit too bare at the moment.layer the beat / boost it
3:23 vocal sample use it more if u want to make it more "old skool"
that said musically it all fits, sounds more breakbeaty than old skool
the only thing i miss in this tune is a more organic approach;
a real trumpet or violin (or a grand piano) recording could make this stand out:
dub this tune with some real akoustic elements (real-time or good samples)
for example:
ask someone who plays a classical or jazz instrument to record over your track and do maybe a solo, or play some chords or a melody on your keyboard with an orchestral bank: this could make your tune very musical and professional.
The vibe/base is already there, it just needs some "music" (real chords/melodies) to fill it up.
If I hear this tune, my fingers are itching to play some chords along
this would be very nice to use for base at a live dnb/jazz-session with real artists.
about the sound:
get it right, but don't pump it up to much, give your tune more punch, but keep the akoustic feel in mind.

When you chose your sounds well you don't need a lot of EQing, in this case it is all sounding pretty ok, the drums could be a tad more upfront though and the bass is on the silent side too. Very entertaining sound, but very laidback sound overall.
The piano elements sound very good, are those samples or did you play them on a plugin?

The piano chords are the best thing about this tune! got that jazz vibe going on which I like. The bass is a bit weak, The bassline however is great. I can imagine just a really nicely big sine-y bass sound making this. and im not sure about that tremelo'd lead line :s With a phatter beat/crisper drums and a bigger bass it would be sick. I think minimalist is the key to chilled out tunes, but it could do with a few more effects thrown in there, just to keep the interest going. Mate If I were you I'd find that .flp
Drums are definetly 96 old skool styly. The arpeggio is annoying as hell tho. I'm not really sure man. If you want complete honest it's at 2 min and I'm fast forwarding. Nothing really holds interest in the song. "(Constructive criticism is always welcomed)" No sugar coating here
The breakdown at 3:26 is the best part of the track.
