Please check out my new track 'Bass Response' and post your comments here!

Okay, this is the tune finished but the mix ain't perfect.
I need loads of feedback (and you guys have been really helpful so far) as I don't have monitors (roll on Christmas, haha) only a tiny set of shabby little speakers.
So in order to hear anything I have to burn to CD and play it on the DVD system, the other computer, the laptop, the hifis (you get the drift).
Also, I can't really add any more FX (which I wanted to in a few places) as I have too many synths running realtime and my PC just dies everytime I even try to play the track through.
Must use the sampler more next time.
Hope it's okay!

Actually, I was a little over-zealous with the compression. I am correcting that.

Sounds very centred and a bit muffled.
If you are on lame speakers, switch off any EQ or bass amplification (bass boost) or other stuff that is available on your stereo amplifier to get the sound as flat as possible.
Listen to some pro tunes to learn how they sound on these speakers and adapt your tune towards that sound (compare by A-B listening) this way you can improve your sound a lot on the available equipment.

I'll make this thing sound good if its the last thing I do, heh heh.
You reckon the tune itself is ok?

hi there fellow Reason head! Wink yeah not bad man, i know its a bummer workin on crappy set up Frown you on R4?

i actually like the ideas here half way thru nice little breakdown, like the way u bring it in too.

i can't hear enough low end, mainly the kick definately needs to be brought out a lot more, the mixdown sound a bit muddy could do with some more eq separation, few tweaks. arragement could flow a bit better, maybe more background pads etc? (oh wait ur pc is on max! damn! lol)

synth lead got that old skool hardcore vibe to it, nice! Bigup

cool stuff overall and welcome to be! Big Grin Big Grin

Yep! I love it (Reason that is) Big Grin
It's so intuitive and for some er, reason, no one I know seems to get on with it!
Ah well!

Cheers man.

Okay, cool, I've relayered it and there was a touch of distortion on there which just wasn't working. Just EQ'ing it to give it some more oomph.

Yeh, it needs a fair bit of tweaking and the breaks need a little bit of life. Sounded good on one set of crap speakers but I'm working on the worst set now (if I can get it OK on those then I can probably chop down mountains with my own toes lol)
As per the earlier advice from BattleDrone I'm reference listening at the moment interspersed with blasts of my tune and making notes.

I agree, it needs something to smooth the transitions too.

Yeh its well annoying! It just takes so damn long to do anything and I can't have ANYTHING else running at the same time. Get the tune in 3 second snippets, lol.
Ah, the joys!

Cheers for that, I was aiming for the oldskool in-yer-face lead!
Its a wicked site this, I love the fact that people actually help you out with constructive criticism and/or advice, very useful. Some wicked tracks on here too!

Anyways, back to it!

ok heres a couple of tips for ya mate
buy a decent set of headphones to listen to the tunes you produce, that way, you get a better idea of the sterio image and mastering anyway. i usually always check my track both on headphones and on my system equally
as for the synths... what you could do is render/export each synth as you want it to sound, then load it into a sampler... CPU usage shrinks rapidly...
the only reason i know all this is because ive been in exactly the same situation as you before

anyway, about the tune...
i think the whole thing sounds dry right now, maybe try a little bit of sterio imaging, reverb a few things etc
also needs some more things layered over it like atmos or pads for the intro. if you use the technique i said, then you should be able to do this in realtime now
also try boosting the overall high end slightly... be sure not to overdo it tho. listen in headphones to make sure its not too hissy when u do it

keep at it tho mate, theres a lot of potential there, i think you just need some better producing equipment (new pc, nice loud system etc)

safe

Thanks for the tips man, I'm gonna have to export 'em anyway as i can't do a damn thing in the tune at the moment!
One thing I learned from all this (and elsewhere) is to just keep sampling my synths both for creative and technical reasons. Reason's samplers are pretty wicked so much twiddling can be done!
And yeh, headphones, good shout. Listen My current pair are pretty knackered.

Cheers dude, yep whole thing was really dry. Very noticable in the intro too.
It sounded the worst (in terms of dryness and 'life') when i played the tune thru my mobile phone headphones (and not just cos of the mp3 factor, lol).
Like you and others before said, very centred and kinda dead sounding.
High end has been boosted a touch overall, also re-EQ'd everything separately to try to bring everything out a little.
Anyways, cheers again and I'll keep at it!
