ez .be peeps, was just browsing some other forums today (boooo! i know! lol) but anyways, just wanted everyone's thoughts on using swing on dnb beats - do u use em? if so how much? or in what scenarios may they help you? I remember trying to apply some swing to my drums a while back but it did NOT work at all and haven't used it since, it just sounded completely all over the shop / messy and all the subtle intricacies that i had made were lost, nowadays instead i just pay a lot of attention to my breaks, shuffles, velocities etc etc to get that movement....

any thoughts everyone? Smile

edit: my mate who produces hip hop on FL uses it to good effect, but i have never managed to make it work for DnB, it seemed to create a nice "bounce" with the hip hop speed...

I use it, but only slightly on dnb. My breakbeat tracks have a fair deal of swing and it has added to the dynamics of the tracks, because the drums sound live and played, and not like hard-programmed electronic drums (especially the hats).

Depending on the DAW you have a slider where you can vary the amount of swing that is added. Typically the default values put too much swing on it and it becomes very messy. But adding just a touch of swing can really liven it up.

You also have to apply it correctly, make sure all bars and beats are right on the bar, and if you add swing to the hihats you also have to add it to your ghost snares and tambourine etc, otherwise these will not line up anymore and it becomes a pandemonium.

You can also do it manually btw, record hand claps or play your table with a pair of sticks (or play a groove on the keyboard with a sharp percussion sound), zoom in on the waveform and start cutting away to line up the hats and everything else.

I think it's a slight variation in note lengths depending on where the beat falls in the measure. Where in classical music an eighth note is an eighth note, in jazz there's a slight shuffle to the counting to add more of a groove to it.

Shocked lol ez mate i thought u would have noticed that little slider on FL on the loop sequencer (i think its top or top right? on the loop window not the song one - if i remember correctly!) if u want to see the effect just make a simple hip hop beat or sumthin and turn the slider see what it sounds like! Big Grin

yeah thanks guys, I may experiment, i beleive on R4 it is the "Groove" or Regroove knob... nowadays my beats consist of a lot of layers all separately grouped, but may have a lil play around and just do it subtly - may help...Big Grin

It's because dnb beats are really really fast.
Beside, I believe it only works for drum hits in the step sequencer, not in piano roll.

I see, I was trying it out when I had stuff in the piano roll. But if you work in the step sequencer and then send to piano roll, it will give you the notes with the swing. Thanks for the tip.

In the piano roll you can use one of the quantize patterns to reach the same thing, but like some peepz mentioned, swing & DnB is not a good marriage.

Ah, but only on the half-time sections during the breakdowns.
