If you find it annoying when sites open things like images or external links in new tabs, and you want full control (left-click to open in current tab, middle-click to open in new tab), you can do this in Firefox:

type 'about :config' in the address bar

change these settings:
browser.link.open_newwindow - set to '1'
browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction - set to '2'

This overrides all HTML links with target="_blank" and most JavaScript calls to window.open().
