What part of a turntable would cause the high frequencies in a song to sound distorted? I'm new to this so I have no idea what I need to replace.

yea the only thing your going to get from a turntable is that humming sound when the grounds are lose, the turntable isnt the prob, its your needles like ketz said or your amp/speakers...what kinda T.T. ya got?

The highs sound crackly. I'm pretty sure it's the needle, right?
oh it's a stanton t.60, not great but it's still not supposed to sound this bad.
I've ruled out speakers and mixer and it's happening on both turntables.

Isn't that what they call "vinyl warmth"?

No seriously, which needles do you have now, and for how long have you been using and/or abusing (scratching) your needles, how much weight do you put on them?

I've had them for about 3 weeks.
The counter weight is at a little below 2, I've tried increasing it, it doesn't help.
The needles are Stanton 500B.

sounds to me like your grounds are loose or something is not hooked up proper

does it make a sound when you move the tone arm?
can you hear it without a record?

do you have your shit hooked up through phono or line?

could be alot of things, quite possible its vinyl warmth and your just not used to that sweet sweet crackle Gaga

Maybe it is I'm not used to it. I only hear it when high frequency notes are played, though. It doesn't seem *good* though. Almost like I'm listening to a low bitrate mp3. All the grounds are hooked up though, and it's going through phono.

To me it sounds like heavy clipping or audio which has been amplified way too much. So I’d say your amp is broken or not correctly set.

Yeah, I think the same. You tried switching needles with another type to see what's happening?

Since you only have them for 3 weeks, I don't think it will be your needles. And bad needles would give a more uniform crackle.

Are you using a mixer? If so, have you tried hooking up your TT directly to an amplifier? If you can't because your amp doesn't have a phono input, try turning down the gain on your mixer a bit, that might help.
Do you have the same problem on several records, or only on the one you posted a clip from?

Have you adjusted the weight properly? (check your TT and needle manual for correct procedure and best setting)

The gain is normal and the weights have been adjusted properly.

Could it be that it's because I just have the mixer connected directly to my soundcard on my PC?

Can be, if your PC soundcard is creating that hum. Try connecting something else to the mixer and test it (or try connecting the mixer to MIC input on the soundcard).

Connecting to mic input might not be a very good idea, as a lot of mic inputs are mono, and they certainly have different impedance, which may cause even more distortion.

Do you have the same kind of distortion when listening to the record on a headphone connected to your mixer?

Alright I've completely narrowed this down to either cartridge or needle.
Which is more likely to cause this? I'll replace whatever has a better chance of fixing it.

Hard to tell. Since a needle is usually cheaper than a stylus, you might try that one first.

What type of needle/Stylus is it?

If it is not a very good one, you might try to upgrade to a better one at once?

Stanton 500B cartridge, it came with a needle, so no clue what type it is.
