im very much into the huntemann, bodzin, booka shade etc type of sound, do they pretty much use there synths and program them or would they use something else ontop of there synth to tweak to the sound they want?

The answer to your question would probably best be found in exhastive books that cover the topic.
The single line answer would be that they would be using synthesizers (hardware or software) to generate the melodies that they want from MIDI, and then using effects hardware or software over the top.
I would suggest the following reading:
Simon Cann - How to Make a Noise ****
Rick Snoman - Dance Music Manual ****
Jim Aikan - Power Tools for Synthesizer Programming *****
(The ratings are my opinion)
All of these books can be found on amazon.com
