I'm wondering how all of you producers are seeing the use of samples instead of creating specific sounds with instruments. E.g. when doing a bassline. What do you prefer to do?

I think both are possible, it is just a matter of preference. if u use midi input on your computer u can also combine a midi keyboard as instrument for controlling the sound of sample etc. (the possibilities with midi are nearly endless) If you want to use instruments like for example a bass guitar or something for the bassline, and you want it to sound right you will need some more recording facilities like a decent preamp to record it on your computer, or dedicated mic in order to be able to record the sound u get from your amplifier etc. The few times that I produce I use samples simply because I don't know how to play any instrument.

I mostly use samples (but I do add lots of effects on them), but I do tend to use more intruments lately.

do you mean playing a bassline on a bass guitar? i've found that it's easier for me to make my own bass/synth samples or one-shots in either reason or cubase and manipulate em and arrange em straight in acid, adding plugins or whatever straight in there......

synths turn me on... so yeah, instruments.
djfreemc: i don't see what midicontrolling has anything to do with samples or synths? What you can do is create a midi-out channel and route it to your directx virtual midibank. (gm) That way you have all the basic sounds. (good sounding piano's you won't find in samples!)

well heheh...think i misspelled. what i mean is using samples instead of generating sounds with synths. creating a bass from the ground up for example. what's your preference? i often see myself having this feeling of wanting to create EVERY sound myself to keep it as 'handmade' as much.

both...
depends, sometimes i like messing around with synths and effects, and resampling those... sometimes i just add in quick samples and use effects on those too...
i do feel that making a track based on samples is 'easy', well not that easy, but still, with synths everything starts a bit more from scratch, and you learn more techniques imo. As where with samples, they are already made by someone who used the techniques on them, so you won't learn anymore...
plus, (soft)synths are indeed sometimes very exciting, the things you can do with z3ta f.e. are endless, and so is the fun of exploring it imo
