Please check out my new track 'Doldrum' and post your comments here!
Right lads, I've been away for a LONG time, but I've finally got Cubase 4 at my brand new home studio setup and have been messing around with it for a few days now.
This track is called Doldrum, it's kinda a response to some shit I got goin on at the moment. I decided I'd take a break from the totally mashed up breakcore/industrial style I usually do and go for something a lil more atmospheric
Lemme know what ya think!
p.s. It's kinda long and you may need speakers with decent bass response :p
The writing/composition is excellent. This makes me think of the film, Babel. This would easily fit on that soundtrack. At first I thought your synth sounds were too... cheap sounding? But when you actually listen to the music, especially once the amen beat drops in - this is some really atmospheric stuff. Man I can't even finish my sentences. I'm more into really hard drum n bass, like pretty much all of Substance D by Dieselboy, but this is really good. You've managed to do a lot with a little. You took a few pretty drab synth sounds an made them complex, and very atmospheric. Excellent.

Cheers man
I thought I'd give atmospheric stuff a go for once hehe
Yea that weird droney synth at the beginning is the Cygnus-O VST (really good, check it out cos its free!) n I was trying to get the whole desolate mood going with it, so it's kinda sparse n weak.
Definitely liking this one mate. It's very long and you have to be patient when listening to it but it's worth the wait for sure. Nice to hear something so experimental, atmospheric and yet good. I paricularly enjoyed the half-tempo stuff. That really got me chilling and I was secretly hoping the track would stay like that.
When the amen drops at around 5.00 it sounds very slow. What tempo is that? Around 158? Don't get me wrong, I like it like that but it almost sounds too slow for dnb, more like fast breakbeat or something. The kick seems a bit quiet to me, I'd love to hear them a bit louder.
From 5.00 onwards I think you should think about getting some more low frequencies in there. There's plenty of stuff going on in the highs and mids, but not enough in the low-mids and lows. Needs a bit more depth. Perhaps you could simply turn up the sub? That would probably be sufficient.
Melodies are excellent throughout. Very chilled, like I said. Can't really fault them.
Nice track mate, I can tell a lot of work went into it. Cool.
How's about a reciprocated review on my latest tune, Eye of Horus?
Cheers!

Cheers man, i know it's kinda long but I figured it's more of a track that you either critically listen to or just have in the background, cause its not loud n in ur face like most of my stuff :p
Tempo's 150 i think, i tried it at 160 but the half time part sounded too forced at that speed so I decided to go back to 150, probably my fave tempo (I like old skool jungle)
I'm tweaking it as we speak to get the end time-stretch to sound better so i might have a look at the kick (I deliberately turned the low eq down, which is very odd for me, because i wanted the amen to be a little less of the key element [again, very very VERY odd for me :p {so odd in fact it's warranting triple brackets to explain my point!}])
turning up the sub is gonna be a big problem, i might have a look at compressing it better but its the first time ive managed to get a nice sine thump and its scraping the ceiling as it is lol
Intro got my attention and made my all calm, nice. Don't like the "play along" bassline too much, do something a little different with it.
This is VERY slow for DnB, but it does sound nice.
Somehow those breakcore amens get a bit lost in the whole relaxed atmosphere (and they are way too silent).
Nice to hear something completely different from you.

easy, this is definately one for the early mornings coming back from a mashup night out, very atmos and very chilled, nice stuff. i have to disagree with the sub comment (sos Tomos) this is the kind of tune which needs a deep sub which u only hear on big subwoofers. like all the drum variations that u got in there - definately has got an old skool vibe to it. however i would like them a little more upfront or at least a little brighter. good use of timestretching and effects. maybe the main riff gets a tiny bit boring - maybe stick in a variation of that?
peace

How do you mean the main riff? the chord progression?
OOOO a key change would be cool
one of the really dark squarepusher style ones
Plenty of people seem to be saying i need to turn the drums up, they seem ok to me but it seems everyone thinks theyre too quiet so i can have a look at them again
pads and synths are quite nice, melodies and overall composistion is good, long track and it takes a while to build up but its well put together. half step drums are nice when they come in, but the snare could use another layer, something with a bit more snap to add some punch to it. half-step section creates a nice chilled out vibe tho, liking that.
amen break that comes in has some nice variations to it, but its really quiet and seems to fade into the background with the over-powering pads, tone the pads down a bit (through eq and levelling) and turn the amen up, seems lost amoungst other elements at the mo,
nice work, good chilled out tune, nice work.
Song is very beautiful and melodious. But amen slices in the second part are too quiet and hide in pads imo. Anyway beat structure is interesting and filters are located where it is necessary.
What did u use for wind instruments? I really love horn, but i am not sure it is a horn
BTW the first slow part reminds me music from the game Eve online
Overall i think ur tune contain 2 independent tracks: the first is idontknowwhichstyle and second is dnb version of the first

woah is this 8 mins long?! yes, i'm lovin the strings in the intro - nice emotions definately feelin em! like those hihats from around 2:00 did u put some phase on em? nice sound! suggestion - more fx in the intro with the hip hop beat, not too much, jus sum subtle stuff goin on in the background to add to the great atmosphere that you've created here, theres sumthin very sad, alsmot like a mourning feel with that vibe - love it!
cool old skool amen shizzle goin on from 5:00 onwards, yeah its a bit slow but thats what makes it feel more old skool
some nice extra synth when the amen comes in - like that too
i guess in terms of constructive criticsm - do u reckon the beat could be turned up a notch? overall a very nice composition, and a really good tune imo

Yea theres some phase on the hats
I've been toyin with the idea of some really ambient synths to fill out that half time beat, might give it a go
Yea i was goin for sad and mournful, it was like i said in one of your threads, i was feelin pretty crappy when i wrote this, I usually get musical inspiration at times like that (which sucks cos i'd need to be sad all the time to write decent music!)
You mean turn the amen up? right thats it ur the like 8th person to say that so im gonna do it lol
