everything that is cheap tends to be crappy in some way

about a month ago, when I was buying my yamaha subwoofer I tested a couple of new sennheiser upto 50 euros models.. the sound was very tinny, mids were sounding muffled.. my mates confirmed it... which is not good considering the price wasnt THAT low... I am saying new cause I didnt see them before

Yeah, I've got a really cheap pair of Senn's (£10). They're well worth the price tag but realistically speaking the sound is very thin. No way near good enough for producing. But if you've got a few quid/euros to spare, Sennheiser do loads of decent headphones. Money well spent.

I've got Technics RP-DH1200's. Bought em when my Sony's broke to shit (lotsa djing -- both earpieces fell off and I had cable problems, like one side cutting out.) Those were the mad expensive silver and black ones too.

The Technics are great and oh so comfy. They also have a replaceable cord. It's hard sometimes to get levels right when producing -- I've found that they really make things sound good, then when I export my song and listen to it in the car, the song is missing some important frequencies.

That said, from what I understand you should be doing that sort of thing on monitors

I love the Technics tho. Especially for djing. I def recommend them, and they were alot cheaper than the Sony's I had.

not necessarily true, I do 99% of my mixing on headphones and I'm pretty happy with my mixes.

But I feel thats because I spent out and got some top range STUDIO headphones, not dj or general consumer headphones.

Don't want to be a dick but...Sony MDR-V6 are THE BEST you can get for the $ as a studio headphone. The others listed are good DJ headphones, and if that is your intended use then go for it, but the MDR-V6's DESTROY all of the ones listed in this thread and are about the same price. Trust me.

If you A/B compare them you will hear the difference. I'm coming from a pair of MDRv600 which I used to think were "good", now they sound like shit!

Good luck shopping

I spose the higher u pay the better. My Sennheiser HD25 has been one of the best things ive ever bought. $450 Australian, but hell, they make music I love sound great. There are many different ones you can go for, for different types of music. I saw HD25's around alot, most dj's i have seen use them, not sure about production, but thats what I use them for.

I just got a pair of sennheiser HD280 pro, and I'm more than satisfied with them. The sound is crystal clear and the frequency response is tailored to give an accurate representation of the sound, not enhanced for musical enjoyment. The bass is fantastic, clear and deep, without being over emphasised. Previously I had a pair of Sony MDR V500, originally purchased for DJing, and there really is no comparison...at all. I'd highly recommend them for anybody who's limited to when you are able to use your monitors (like me) and are relying on a high quality pair of cans for general producing. Obviously I'd still recommend using your monitors for mixing, where you can, but these headphones are about as accurate as you can get and I've got some nice sounding mixes using these alone. Smile

My mate has them and from what he's told me they are good. He should know he does love his monitoring (got 3 sets of sweet monitors)

Like i think i said before i have the Sony MDR-7509 and I love 'em

Nice fairly flat sound, i can get good mixes on them and i can wear them for long periods without them getting uncomfortable.
Sometimes i forget to take them off even if im not listening to anything!

What's the difference between MDR-V6 and MDR-7509 then? Tongue
Except for the price, obviously.

I got them from a company that specializes in it (link). Very good stuff, but way too expensive if you don't intend to use them professionally (ie as in for profit). They cost 4x as much as really good regular headphones, and last only a few years. Mine are now 4 years old and already they are worn down, the sound has deteriorated and I need to get new ones soon. But it's perfect for their intended use and when new they sound very good. They also block out outside noise amazingly well, as they are formed perfectly to the shape of your ear and ear canal.

They look a bit like small translucent alien worms with wires inside Big Grin
