The masses only apreciate music when
- it has happy sounding vocals in it, preferrably female
- when the melodies and sounds are easy to listen to
- when the songstructure is straightforward, so that you can keep the playingtime under 3 minutes...
At least, that's what I figure when looking at the carts, so a few commectial track won't make most of them appreciate the real DnB, it will make them love those commercial tracks only...

indeed , when i ask people what they think about dnb (those who aren't really in general in contact daily with the music) or if they can give an example i almost always get the same replies ,

shake ur body from ...(ochgot hoe hete die nu weer, they went to pukkelpop aswell two years ago)

or that song from marky and xrs ( where they already made a remake from , since that tune it seems to me that marky in general has commercialised his stuff becoz that one tune really hit the masses Roll Eyes ) ach ja , didn't like em too much anyway

or kosheen , hide you ,

@ phazzy , i don't know exactely where you're from (apparantely not from belgium i guess Wink ) but here in belgium the commercialisation started a few years ago around the time that kosheen , marky & xrs and that other dj (from shake you're body) released this songs all around the same time sort or less , it became played a lot on the public radio , the people loved it coz it reflected a big summer vibe , the feeling of the summer , and then probably the promotors of big parties realised that this public radio was a good way through wich they could promote mass events like starwarz etc

for me personnaly it had been quite a "bruuske change , just from one starwarz on to another : i went to starwarz two , three and four .... and on number five there was suddenly a mass of people in the vooruit , even had to wait outside before i could get in , no more ropm in vestiaire , just too much people ... well , i never saw that coming so i was pretty startled at first but well , i thought , those who really like it will stay , those who don't will go away again ...`

coz a few years ago if i'm not mistaken , dnb was even announced "dead" , just a year or two before the commecialisation began , so i think that it will probably be pronounced dead again in a couple of years ( many people tell me that it is kinda already dying even !) so by then all the tourists (who haven't "ondertussen" become real dnb lovers , it can happen , everyone starts as a tourist!) will be away , there will be another trend probably when that happens , and those people will be happy enough to jump on another train that's leaving ( elektro/goa ???)

just my two cents ofcourz Wink

about doa: "The Grid" is still pretty ok i think, although there are some wankers that like to start nagging/fighting about everything, it still is a good (maybe the best?) place to get information about production.

about parties: sometimes i realy hate those people that come to eg startwarz, just stand there all night doing nothing but laughing with other people 'making all those weird moves' Big Grin
(i'm citating some dude here; i had the impression he and his buddys were making fun of us so i went to ask him what was so funny and then he said something like that; pretty pathetic way of going out imo for that guys)

i`m from pittsburgh pennsylvania (USA) and we used to have massive here quite often...however, just what you people are talking about killed it all...and commercialism is bad...i`ve seen first hand that when too many people get involved and EDM becomes trendy you have meat head jockos and club sluts coming to your parties to get fucked up and then soon everyone knows and the cops come shut parties down and then soon the government gets involved they`ll make a news special about the horrors or these "rave" parties and what the drugs are doing to our "youth" and that will be it....i don`t know if the masons just want us all to conform and not express ourselves...because designer drugs "illuminate" things...or what but thats my theory...and if yall don`t know what freemasons are you best be finding out because LOL...they have a lot to do with shit getting fucked up....and it`s a very indiret way...think of trendy party goers as wolves in sheeps clothing....as for the bad mouthing thing i know some DJ`s that do that here...i think they want everyone else to think they`re the better DJ i threw a party and invited these guys to spin and they tried hogging the decks the whole time acting like they were so good trying to hype themselves up it`s retarded what happened to having fun....??? back to basics style vibes are a thing of the past these DNB elitist fucks think that anyone new coming up in DNB is stepping on their toes...but thats just because they`re afraid someone else is gonna be better than them....it`s like you`re "selling drugs" on their turf....except you`re taking away from the amount they get booked...it`s all about remaining relavant in the "scene" whatever the "scene" is anymore....at least here....*forest gump voice* "and thats all i have to say about that"

i think DNB is too obscure for "conformist sheep" they can`t shake their ass to it like hip-hop they think...they try to dance to every sound...they don`t realize you dance half tempo which about the usual speed of hip hop....hahaha.....cronie bologna!!!

maybe i`ll remix a brittney spears song...actually no joke a good sample would be the first few intro bars to her song toxic....but then she`d sue whoever did it unless they gave her a lifetime supply of XTC

It might awaken some interest towards other d'nb with some people & let them discover it , so I don't think these commercial tracks are necessarily a bad thing. I actually like some of those tracks, some are well-made but just have a more catchy melody & lyrics.

look at trance...and again i don`t know if this is everywhere....but...most people don`t like EDM they always have something to say about it....a lot of people i know wonder how i can listen to DNB all the time....thats another story....but again look at trance it`s hard to get the mainstream to appeciate this music but you have the zombie nation track uhohhhhhhohhhh...whatever it`s called....or darudes sandstorm playing in a trendy top 40 club everyone eats it up....but if you played a random track by chris lawrence....or even just a random paul van dyk track that wasn`t made trendy...people would be like what the hell is this crap.....i don`t really think that some of the commercal tracks are liked because they are DNB....i think they are liked because of a paticular vocalist used in the track....the song AK1200 used to spin "drowning" it was never hugely popular here but it was known well enough or was more able to be tolerated because of it`s vocal....when people don`t have words to define what a song means to them they don`t like it....it`s like god forbid you use your own imagination and come up with a feeling yourself....thats why i like a lot of DNB because there is no smacked out drug addict whining about his life even though he`s a rich bastard.....that everyone thinks they relate to in some indirect way....i`m not saying don`t use lyrics in DNB because some are good....it` s just that it should remain where it belongs....in the street, in tunnels, in the woods LOL anywhere but in a huge record company CEO`s hands

Commercial music is about
- Who's the face of the track?
- Is he/she pretty?
- Can you relate to him/her?
- Would you like sex with him/her?
- Do they play it 10 times a day for 6 months on the radio?
- The music is just a way to sell the lyrics, or the person who supposedly produced the vocals.

DnB (and other underground music) is simply about the music, and that's how it should be.
