There is a way if you specify what will be the source of the signal (most likely 'internal mixer').

This is exactly how to do it. I use this method all the time.
Start > Programs > Accessories > Entertainment > Volume Control
Volume Control is the internal mixer, every PC should have this option through the file menu or by double clicking the speaker icon (if there is one) in the bottom right hand corner of the monitor screen.
Once volume control is opened, choose recording option and tick the box that applies to the signal you want to record.
Sorry if its explained in a very basic way, i'm not being patronising.

cheers peps.
yeh ive tried this but still cant seem to get a signal in sound forge for anything thats played, media player, vlc player, power dvd.
in the volume control it wont allow me to adjust the slider for the recording mixer, im using an emu 0404 sound card, dunno how recording differs for this?

Audacity is something like soundforge.
The ability to record from the devices you're talking about is not standard on all soundcards, but Audacity does have that ability built in.
