For audio interface I recommend Terratec Phase 26 or 28
http://www.google.com/search?q=terratec+phase+26+prices
or M-Audio Midiman delta 44/66
http://www.google.com/search?q=m-audio+midiman+delta+prices

and for headphones I recommend AKG K series, the higher the number the better:
http://www.google.com/search?q=AKG+K+prices

don't have much experience with monitor speakers, though, so I can't share any advice on those.

if you can't spend too much money on speakers, buy krk's or mackies, they give the best value for your money
if on the other hand you decide to save some more
buy jbl LSR series monitors, or Dynaudio BM5A/6A's

or if you go frenzy, buy Focal Rockin

Headphones arejust not the same thing as monitors...
if you have "ok" headphones, then go for monitors. I'd get KRK if I were you, don't throw away all your money on them. It will be a huge improvement compared to production on headphones only.
I have an M-audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, it's not overly expensive and it does the trick (just guessing that your not on a laptop).

They are nice buti thought they were a bit much in the top end.

My friend has some and even with the high frequencies cut on the switch on the back they still seemed a little harsh making them a little annoying to work with for long lengths of time.

although if the speakers are top heavy your mixes could end up sounding nice, warm and rounded elsewhere.

you really need to go to a shop and test out some speakers first.

Take a CD with some tunes that you know inside out to the shop and test
it out on the speakers they have.

that's because they spend more on advertising than on production Big Grin
krk sells thousands of units a year in benelux alone
they're okay, but nothing special imo

I got an unpleasant surprise after doing that...

The monitors I bought sound great in a big room and a big distance between the monitor and the back wall. When I installed them in my closetsized room the low end was way smaller than in the shop.

pretty new on the market, but well worth the buy, and imo one of the best studio monitor's around (price/quality) are the JBL LSR series, a pair of LSR4326's costs about 1100EUR/pair
and sound fenomenal, they also have a pretty decent room control mode, to measure the accoustics of your room and adjust their output according to it. (comes with a litte mic to measure)
