I think you are missing DC's point.

Sine waves are single frequencies with no harmonics so if you play a low note at say 60Hz there is nothing above (or below for that matter) so therefore no real need to filter it

technicly a sine wav played at 60hz won't make a sound about 90hz ina perfect world. but even on fsoft synths, if you remove above the 90hz, you'll ear static and hiss be removed. and if you happen to be playing notes iwth that sine (it happens often i find) it'll prevent a stupid soundinf 200hz sine wave. trust me that's not as phat sounding. it's sounds like a hearing test then. if you do it high enough it's the test tone on tv, which is a 1000hz sine.
