If your pc is very old I'd not put any money into it anymore. Then you should buy a whole new system.
If you have less than 2 GB of memory then go for memory.
If you have a single core CPU you'd better buy a whole new system.

wrong, its the other way round
with enough ram (2 gigs is enough) theres no need for swapping memory on the hard drive. once the samples get loaded theres no hard drive activity..

still .5second samples do not take much ram at all. unles you're doign multi layered 2 hour long tracks that are all samples most of them are like 2 seconds longest.... all synths runf rom pc, and the program runs off of the harddrive. including the synths, and they run fast with better harddrive, the most underlooked and underrated upgrqade you can possibly get to improve preformance for yuor buck.
but disregard if ou want, i just found from personal use that it helped more than any other upgrad eand i got the extra gigs of ram andnoticed no change at all. 350 mb of ram max 500 mb of ram gets used. really over rated to get ram upgrades. it's mroe for running multiple programs and mroe for visuals like photoshop or movie editing.
when yuo're waiting for shit to load up that's not ram or PC. and that load up time is a real cramp wheny uo got things flowing. last i am gunna say about the overlooked hard drive upgrade.

Make sure you buy a Intel Core 2 Duo class of processors, their performances are about 20% better than Core 1 Duo class (the price is about the same) and they largely outperform Dual Core class as well as best AMD processors in the same rank.

hopefully won't have to upgrade that for a long time to come |
dude, add RAM... especially for a quad core
1gb/core is a good start. XP won't be able to use more than 4Gb, unless tou trick it...
while vista doesn't have enough with 4Gb
