rumour goes the new "mini"-kernel for this one will only take up 33mb, which is nothing compared tot the dinosaur-sized beast that vista uses.

Maybe they gave up, so they started over? It could even be an improvement, if they make an 'I know how to work with computers' mode available, that doesn't ask you if you are sure 3x every time you click something. AAAAARGH!

Will never happen if apps devs won't start doing Linux versions of their stuff. As long as Adobe doesn't make Photoshop and Indesign for Linux, eg, no graphics designer is going to switch. And don't say The Gimp, because it's not up to the same level.
Too bad

You are way off now. I have XP for several years (Service Pack 2), and it is pretty stable operating system. We all know that the first version of all operating systems is released to find and fix errors which couldn't be found in the initial testings - and there come the service packs. Linux was not much better than DOS when it started but it was constantly upgraded, and here it is. Something very similar happened to Windows.
I agree that Vista is a bugger - but will get a lot better in SP 2 or something (like it happened with XP), so wait.
I also installed Ubuntu, and I must say it's not that logical

i think a big problem for the Linux world is that mainly geeks use it and not families with kids who buy games and thus spend enough money.
The biggest opponent for MS is Apple, doubled their presence on the web (browser ID's) in 2 years time (8% --> 16%).
I never saw any feature of Vista where I have to say: it's worth the money, I've been waiting for that. And all that visual blabla only gets on my nerves. It looks like a lot of companies missed the compatibility train for Vista. Sloppy work from MS.
And then that shit with "Vista compatible" on pc's that were sold with XP and it turned out they can only run Vista home basic. That is saying fuck you to the customer.
Linux is still a jungle with to many flavours and versions and even in 1 flavour there are 2 GUI's available.

i have found the financial pressure to to make new OS drives the product
into the market much sooner than is ready.
new OS's always come out with soo many unfixed issues.
best to buy the previous one... as all bugs will have been fixed.
i will probably get vista when the next new OS comes out and
therefore all vista issues will have been resolved by then.

xpsp2 is stable.
so is windows nt but that's what xp is based off of.
but you obviously know so much since you do linux to produce music...
that's a new one.
and i ahvn't upgraded or updated since sp2 and it's been fine.
basicly who wants to upgrade when you can get OS x for mac which ripped off msot of the ideas that Vista was based off of and has been around longe rto fix more bugs. |
I am not, Im still using windows but I know a couple of people who produce on linux...

XP was based on 2000 pro, not NT.... millenium was kind of based of NT and 98, the result speak for itself.

Erm, no
Vista is based on XP
XP is based on 2000
2000 is based on NT4
Milennium IS 98 with some added features, mainly bugs.

The last two computers I built for total computer noobs run on ubuntu
Very easy to install stuff
100€ cheaper
Does everything they need
They can't screw it up since they don't have administrator privileges
and then they complain that they don't have MSN, and that Pidgin works yes, but it doesn't look like MSN

well you are not completly right... client OS are based on server releases, therefore vista is based on 2k3, not xp.
2000 was def not based on NT4 as NT was the last windows OS using pure DOS. 2000 was a new "concept", to get away from that nt crap.
I personally would love to see a satble emu that run .exe on linux, but unlucky so far.
