In all seriousness though, you should probably curb back your listening volume. Maybe look into the earplugs earlier mentioned in the thread. I'm 19 and pretty worried about the future of my hearing.

I did well there
Have a really little damage to my hearing (I think mostly to my wearing of earplugs while attending parties).

You asking about the physical cause of the change of your ears' response to sound?

Inside your ear, the signal is passed through vibrations until it reaches the cochlea. This is a spiral shaped shell which is filled with fluid and lined with small hairs. As the sound becomes louder, the membrane that the hairs sit on starts to ripple, and the louder the sound, the more intense the ripples become. The hairs as a result can become detached from the membrane and therefore leaving our ears less responsive to sound. We only have a certain amount of these hairs so when they go..they're gone. Look after them! Theres a link on the homepage of the Hospital records site to a programme that was shown on BBC in the UK. It features Danny Byrd and has a lot of info on hearing loss and how to avoid it. Search Hospital records on Google and its on the main page. Quick tho, BBCi only works for a week after the programme was broadcast. Very informative tho.

If you need proof that idiots can create brilliant music, this is it.
(I like the way the link starts half way through the video at the relevant bit, btw.)

ez chaps, iv been wearing plugs since 2002 mainly coz i brought myself a suzuki gxr1000 and the wind noise at speed(err non crusing speeds shall we say) was really hampering me when i stopped for fuel or on a ride out to a pub, constant ringing made it hard to listen to wot was said. i went to see the doctor and he recommended
getting plugs, since then(although my riding has calmed down(a bit)) i feel plugs have helped me out no end.
i do take my plugs to gigs,(didnt valve soundsystem give out ear plugs when they 1st opened?),but having read this topic i'll be taking them in to the studio too, prevention is better than cure in this case.

I think it better to keep the levels low in the studio. Keep it around 75-80Db. I got a Db meter and I do measure sometimes, just to make sure I'm not doing any more damage.

It's a shame there are no dB meters here, or they are too damn expensive.

That doesn't sound to good.
I'm 17 and I can hear that 16 Khz crystal clear.
As a baby and some part of my childhood I had hearing problems. I always had tubes in my ears. I think this is a side effect, but I do have a constant ringing in my ears. It's always been very quiet, I hardly am ever conceious it even exists. It's at like, exactly 16Khz. Is this bad? Or just a side effect?
My hearing is excellent when it comes to mixing and stuff. I just think I'm not as sensitive, so I do have to turn the volume up a bit louder. But never to loud.

I have this ringing too since early childhood, doesn't bother me too much.
Your hearing can be trained for mixing just keep going at it.

Try listening to white and pink noise, might treat the problem a bit.

I think he meant "You should check the frequency response of your headphones as well".
Some can roll off at 50hz-14/15 Khz and so on.
