My laptop wont boot off the harddisk anymore and says it cannot find a boot drive with the OS on it. Also in the BIOS it wont find the drive and when i put in the windows xp installation disk it also refuses to find the hard drive. Is there any ideas out there for fixing this?
My own next line of thoughts was to open it and take out the hd and trying to connect it to my other computer and seeing if i can get onto it through my desktop pc. However i have not opened a laptop before and therefore wanted to check out the alternatives and also hear some ideas on whether this is a smart idea or not.
I figured to try on here before i go out of my way to save up for a new hd for my laptop. (im pretty much broke right now)
Help is wel appreciated
peace

How's the waranty status of the laptop?
If you open up the laptop any waranty will be void.
Opening a laptop is a delicate operation, but I guess it's the only thing you have left for now.

time to dig up the old paperwork.. i bought it in the summer of 2006, so one and a half years ago.. as it seems there is still a garantee through asus the laptop manufacturer... sweet, means that the problem is solved on my behalf.

oh no dude.. then the screen would also be magnitized. (wierd colours and stuff) Plus i cant imagine it happening because most prof. monitors are built into a special cabinet reducing the magnetic field and i dont have any big magnets just lying around hahaha.

definately, i still cant believe the price that i payed for that laptop and the quality that came out of it.. it has been through quite some travelling and carrying around but never dropped it or the likes of it. I will find out tomorrow when i call asus whether they will help me tho and how.

Dont be so sure about this my mate had his macbook next to his KRK's thinking this and they fucked his HD |
fair enough, but i remember reading about it in the manual for my monitors... when i got them i figured it was important to check the stats of the monitors... plus when my hard disk failed it was NO WHERE near the monitors in the first place... because i still use a desktop computer that is completely upgraded and specially installed for making music... so my laptop has no business in the studio.

Have you tried seeing the settings in the BIOS, maybe it doesn't recognize your HD. Try making it auto-recognize your HD.
