It hung up during shut down, if this happens often you should consider re-installing your machine. Make sure to have good backups NOW, not THEN.
The problem is probably caused by a system process that could not be quit during shutdown. Normally Windows has a timeout for this, if a process fails to shut down you get a message that the process is not responding (and get asked if you want to kill it), but when this happens to one of the core processes after the graphical layer (GUI) has been shut down already it can happen that the core process has not been warned that the GUI is already down and thus tries to display the message. This can - in rare cases - cause the machine to hangup during shutdown.
Why do I tell you to make backups then? Because this is a core process doing bad things, it could mean that some core DLL's from windows got damaged and will do this more often. Just keep an eye on it, it doesn't have to be a big deal.

Some of the latest power suplies have a cooldown function, if the pc got heated a lot, for example from playing a demanding game or some rendering work, the fans will keep on running for some time to cool down the pc, even if you have shut it down. Perhaps you have one of these? After 2-5 minutes it should definately stop though.
