Sounds like your machine has joined a botnet dude... Not much you can do about it other than save your data to another disk and format the bootdisk and then re-install.
How much memory does the machine have?
What Windows are you running?
Are you connected more or less permanent to the internet?
Are you running an up-to-date antivirus?
Are you running a good up-to-date firewall?
Do you visit sites that offer free porn or warez or illegal mp3's and more of that stuff? (don't specify what exactly, just yes or no will do
)
Are you able to check out the running processes on your machine and see if anything strange is going on?
Try cleaning the machine with some malware scanner.
Try creating a new user and logging on with that one.
Try booting in safe mode and see if it uses a lot less memory.
Try booting disconnected from the internet. Does it work better then?

Botnet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Botnet
I mean backup your samples, mp3's, documents, ... then re-install Windows and your programs (format the harddisk first).
Safe mode... press F8 when the pc is booting, a menu will appear, choose "Safe mode without network connection".

Hold your horses!
It's very unlikely that you got a virus through a samplepack because wav files normally don't contain a virus (they don't get executed so no use).
These days viruses are a bit more intelligent than that. You get them from a website and they install themselves deep into the system, so deleting any files you downloaded is not going to help. A good virus will not show itself, will not lame the computer by its activities, but just give a bit of extra cpu load in order to function unnoticed. You either caught some oldfashioned virus which is not hiding very well or something else is going on. Scan your machine with some up-to-date scanners.
What happens if you tell your firewall to block all internet activity?

You can get malware hidden in wav/mps's ect.
The other day, I put an old backup cd in my machine and Kaspersky went mad at a few wav samples saying they had trojans in them. I also read recently an article on how to place a virus in a normal picture file using WinRar!
Just be carefull where you get samples from and always scan. Be real careful with Limewire.

How does malware get to install/activate when it iis in a datafile like wav then?
I googled a bit on the subject and didn't find any clear indications for it.
P2P networks are know for their high risk for malware infection.

I might be mistaken then. I apologise. I just checked the results again and it is actually a WMA file. But the file name says it a WAV....
Just a thought on the ram shooting up high. Have you installed any other new software, like Office, Nero ect. THese software types often work in the background doing things like mapping ya files, supposedly for your benefit. Also, have you installed a new antivirus or had a engine update. That could be causeing excess use of ya ram and cpu.
My computer is a bit slow now, because of various programs I have installed. I tried to re-install windows again the other day but, my Cd drive has packed in, but strangely enough, it still reads DVD's!!!!

Ok mate, i know your problem as i have just had the same thing the other week and it drove me crazy, i will tell you how i got rid of it in my own simple way but others here will be able to give a better explanation:
The pop-up messeges are fake and are created by the people who created the viruses in the firstplace.
I wrote down the exact wording of the messages and googled them which lead me to various websites and a whole load of threads with people posting the same issues.
Alot of these sites have tech people who ask you to post post reports of logs using programs like hijackthis that which you may find useful..
I downloaded and tried out these programs:
smitfraudfix
ewido (which is actually avg anti virus)
Hijackthis
combofix
none worked
BUT..
This program did, its called TROJAN REMOVER
http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html
Its only a trial version and expires after 30 days but that doesnt matter for what you need it for.
Very useful and it worked for me, i followed the onscreen instructions maybe had to start in safe mode cant remember
good luck those messages are fucking annoying
