Hi people,
Im lookin to get a new PC or laptop to start turning out some new tunes on. I have a pretty decent computer at the moment but it just cant handle the stress im putting on it any more so i was wondering if you guys could recommend any places to get a top spec pc to make some new beats.

I basically need some help choosing what type of pc i need. Its only gonna be for makin DnB and other electronic music so i dont know if this means i should be looking for a different spec PC?

Any help would be appreciated,
Safe

I think a PC with a powerfull processor and a good soundcard should do, you don't need a top graphics card if you're only interested in producing and not in gaming. Also you'll need a good bunch of RAM to load a lot of effects and vst's. Regular RAM is very cheap nowadays, so don't save on that. You don't need the top speed DDR3 RAM or anything, regular speed DDR2 will do if you're not planning on overclocking. Also you'll want some quiet coolers (passive if possible), because any noise your pc makes, disturbs your music sound.

For the moment I would advice something like this:

- intel Quad core Q6600 or Q6700 processor with a quiet cooler. (such as the thermalright ultra 120 or scythe ninja, keep in mind these are rather big, and you'll need to fit them in your case)
- 4 gig of ram to hold all your vst's
- GeForce 7600GS or 8600GS graphic card wit passive cooling
- a silent Power supply providing at least 400W
- perhaps one or two silent case fans, placed on cooling-strategic points
- if you are composing/building your own system instead of buying one of the shelve, consider using a case designed for silent systems such as the antec P180

- there are a lot of good sound cards for production, i'll refer to the dozen of other threads about sound cards on this site.

# Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium
# Intel Core 2 Duo Mobile T7100 processor (1.8GHz, 800MHz, 2MB cache)
# 1GB DDR2 RAM 667MHz
# 120GB Serial ATA 5400rpm hard drive

versus

# Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate
# Intel Core 2 Extreme Mobile X7900 processor (2.8GHz, 800MHz, 4MB cache)
# 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 RAM 667MHz
# 200GB Serial ATA 7200rpm hard drive

more expensive version of Windows Vistvuck (yukkie either way), super fast CPU, bigger cache mem, 4x more memory, super large HD. You better asked which similarities there are between the 2!

I think for music production I would go for a Zieo N650-HDS

Nice machines BTW.

All this is of little importance, what you need is a GOOD soundcard!

I think the best option if you want a super fast computer is to get it custom built. Im not sure if this applies so much to laptops but check out this website:

www.pcspecialist.com

I bought myself a desktop pc from there the other day, heres the spec.

Processor (CPU)
Intel® Core™2 Quad Q6600 (4 X 2.40GHz) 1066MHz FSB/8MB L2 Cache
Memory (RAM)
4GB CORSAIR XMS2 800MHz - LIFETIME WARRANTY! (2x2GB)
Motherboard
ASUS® P5N-E SLI: Quad-core CPU Ready, NVIDIA® Dual X8 SLI
Operating System
64 BIT WINDOWS® VISTA Home Premium (inc CD & License) (£69)
USB Options
6 x USB 2.0 PORTS (4 REAR + 2 FRONT) AS STANDARD
Memory - 1st Hard Disk

20x Dual Layer LightScribe DVD Writer ±R/±RW/RAM
2nd CD/DVD Drive
16x DVD-ROM WITH 48x CD-ROM
Graphics Card
512MB GEFORCE 8800GT PCI Express + DVI + TV-OUT
Sound Card
SoundBlaster X-Fi (didnt come with PC, bought it myself a few months ago)

Memory Card Reader
INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (READS XD, MS, CF, SD, etc)
Case
Stylish Black Aluminium Trigon Case + 2 Front/Side USB
Power Supply & Case Cooling
600W Quiet Quad Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan (£59)
Processor Cooling
ASUS SILENT KNIGHT II PURE COPPER ULTRA COOLER (£36)
Firewire & Video Editing
2 x IEEE 1394a FIREWIRE PORTS (1 onboard, 1 at back panel)
TV Card
DIGITAL TV CARD (Dual Tuner!) (Watch/Record Freeview on PC) £28
Media Center Kit
Microsoft Remote Control and Receiver for Media Center PC (£19)
Anti-Virus
NORTON ANTI-VIRUS 2008 (£15)
Warranty
1 Year Return-to-Base incl 1 Year Free Collect & Return: £5

This PC came to £917 but i decided to get a super powerfull graphics card because i also wanted to use the PC to play games. I also added in a TV card and media center kit so that i could watch tv on the pc. Without these it would have been around £150-200 cheaper. This is a great deal!

I made up a laptop on the website for just over £1000, heres the spec:

Display
15.4 INCH WIDESCREEN DISPLAY (1440 X 900) + ANTI-GLARE
Processor (CPU)
INTEL® Core 2 Duo T7800 (2 X 2.60GHz) 800MHz FSB/4MB L2 Cache
Memory (RAM)
4GB CORSAIR DDR2 667MHz - LIFETIME WARRANTY! (2x2GB)
Operating System
64 BIT WINDOWS® VISTA Home Premium (inc CD & License) (£69)
USB Options
4 x USB 2.0 PORTS
Memory - Hard Disk
160GB SERIAL ATA II HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (5400rpm)
CD/DVD Drive
8x DVD±R/RW/Dual Layer (+ 24x CD-RW)
Graphics Card
512MB GEFORCE 8600GT + D-SUB + TV-OUT
Sound Card
Realtek ALC268 2 Channel High Definition Audio + SPIDIF OUT
Modem
INTEGRATED 56KBPS V92 MODEM
Network Facilities
Onboard Gigabit LAN & WIRELESS 802.11G NETWORK CARD
Memory Card Reader
INTERNAL 3 IN 1 MEMORY CARD READER (SD, MMC, MS, MS PRO)
Firewire & Video Editing
1 X 1394a FIREWIRE PORT

I rekon you would need to put in a better soundcard but this still looks like a pretty decent laptop for the price.

I bought a PC from this company about 4 years ago and everything was perfect. They overclocked it for me and it has lasted fine. Now that i am doing a lot of audio work with it the proccessor cant really handle it (pentium 3.4Ghz with 1Gig ram) but my new PC is going to be amazing. Cant wait till it arrives. Anyways, check out the website if you are looking for a PC and build a spec that fits your needs. Its a really good site.
