Bonjour
Im pissed off with shit samples......
I buy or download new D'n'B sample packs as often as I can, but they are all bollocks
Im not sure if I am wrong here but surely a drum 'n' bass specific sample pack would feature kicks that dont peak around 60hz.
Every pack I have has almost no kicks that peak above that frequency.... it pisses me off cos it messes with the sub bass.
Are these sub- heavy samples meant for a specific sub genre?
Where can I get neutral sounding kick samples that peak at a decent frequency. (free or not)

Pitch them or use sidechaining.

Or distort them slightly. First push a bit of their higher frequency spectrum and then put some overdrive (but not too much), accompanied with a compressor with a short attack time.
That should give you a nice punch and good body.

haah, tricks of the trade, love it, 909 samples always do the trick for that lil bit of extra punch!
offcourse quality samples are the base, but if they don't directly fit your needs you can always just go for a type of sound/colour that you're looking for and then mess around with the sample, pitch it, resample it, layer it, compress it, eq it, whatever you want till it fits your needs, samples are made to process, certainly in this type of music.

Nice one...
Its taken me all week to get online and read this, but as it happens I found the PSP sidechain compressor in my arsenal and it works a treat. Just knock off the very low end and sidechain the kick and snare with the other elements of your break being ducked and it gives it some nice punch.
