Yo Test! Big ups on that track, its really good as a first attempt for a full track in reason. I think the melodies of the track really work in the jump up style but I would make a few adjustments. I think the rhythms of the drums work well, but it would work better if the drums had more hi hats or added softer drums in the background just to make the drums a bit more flowing. You have also used a square-wave sound in the bass, which sounds good, but many producers will have a similar sound because most plugins and synths have a standard square wave setting. To get a more unique sound you could use the scream distortion effect in the rack for example. Have a look in the reason presents too, in particular the combinator patches, they may not be good to produce a dnb track but u can see how they combine reason instruments (like a subtractor with scream distortion) to create more interesting sounds. If you tried to make a DnB rhythm, then work on that first because it doesn't work. Choose a drumkit that sounds less machine, or better, load a sliced break and work with that to get a feel for good Dnb drums.... At first you should try to make it work with just drums and bass. Other elements will find their way in automatically.

EZ Test
Battledrone gave some good advice when he said to try n start with a break.
Using a sampled break is fine, It'll give you a good staring point. Why not try layerin your own drum hits over a sampled break? That'll give you a decent idea of where kicks n snares etc sit in a dnb break.
You'll be better at writing your own beats by doing this.
The bass n synth here are ok. The glide on the bass is a bit too long imo n both of the instrument choices could have been a bit more interesting.
The important thing is to keep writing tunes. The more you write, the more you'll learn n the better your tunes will get.
Nice one

Hey Test,
I'm pretty new to making computer music, and especially new to the drum and bass scene. Your piece sounds a lot like some of my earlier stuff, so you might be able to use the same resources I did in order to progress.
The beats: I'm starting to get the hang of sequencing a break beat. The key is knowing what drum elements to use and where to use them. To learn, I downloaded sets of drum samples available here and sliced them, rearranging the parts until they sounded right. I tried to slice samples to imitate the patterns of other samples. After a bit of experimentation I began to understand the basics of the DnB beat.
I found these links very helpful:

http://www.simonv.com/tutorials/reason.php
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y1BI-KVnJuE
(Look at some of Panda DnB's other tutorials as well.)
It was also interesting to see real-life break beat drummers. This video and the accompanying sheet music helped me in getting the drums feeling right.

As far as your synth, it's alright. If you can get the beat down, you can put distortion in the bass that flows with the groove. Even with the wealth of tutorials out there, getting nice distortion was very hard for me. I ended up putting two layers of synth together, one more high passed, and one more low passed. I crossfaded between the two, while altering the cutoff frequency for the filters. That gave me some acceptable distortion, whether that's right or not
Good luck with your track, I hope that helped.

Best thing about this track is the bass sounds, which are pretty good. However, everything else needs a lot of work because the mix is sounding pretty flat, especially the beats. The beats have gotta roll and get your head bobbin but this is too slow and drum-machine-like to do either. But keep trying because this tune definitely has some potential there.

gota say that this aint really dnb but i kinda like it man!
like the machine like drums on it! the bass is quite good too - some interesting ideas floating about on this one
agree with the BD about layering the drums. also - try thinking about an intro and an outro.
best way to do that is to load up a sample and then try repeating it - if its funky, keep it!
anyways, keep at it man

ez test.
firstly you need to layer your beats a bit more.
like add kick on kick, snare on snare etc.
also they need some fillers to make it roll and glue together more.
bass sounds ok.
work it bro.
