I want to start a discussion, if I may.
Recently I got hold of the entire Barcode Recordings back-catalogue and my, what a lot of quality music. Spor, Evol Intent, Ewun, Raiden; all quality artists and a fantastic selection of tracks. Nice deep basses, strong drumlines, catchy melodies.
Then I got to Donny. 'The Forgotten'.
'Evil' is the only word that comes to mind when listening to this. It's a very well-produced track, the overtone that snare causes on the bass is incredible, but I couldn't help but feel a change in overall attitude toward the genre after listening to this.
Then I found Current Value's 'Tunnel Vision'.
Again, brilliant clarity and strength, but between these two tracks there is no real change, a whole lot of hard loops with no dynamic, dark stabs that cut like knives and well, you can make your own minds up about music value.
My starters for this discussion is, what are we to call this new style of drum'n'bass? does it already have a name? is there a lot of it?
and most importantly,
can this style of dnb meet the quality and thought of dnb produced by the likes of Noisia and Spor or is it just meaningless noise?
You decide.

You may start a discussion indeed!
I need to check the 2 tunes you are talking about... but I know some of CV work, and I don't like it so much... I mean, the guy is a pro, highly skilled ( his drums are just insanes..) but it is not my thing.
On the other hand, I think that the likes of noisia and Spor, to name a few, are really pushing the "tech-neuro-avant garde" sound a lot lately. I think this is their style, even if they can changes it now and then...
Seems that this new sound is not loved by every drums heads, to each their taste, I respect that. But coming from the underground tech scene ( mainly hard tech, but no hardcvore, thanx!), I really love this neuro sound! It seems to be a natural progression, even if it split the scene a bit more.
I started to listen to jungle back in 95, but I was seeing it as a chilled vibe music, nothing to do with the heavy tunes those guys are now making, so I understand why not all jungle headz digg that kind of sound.
my 2 cents

@harplnsdrftr
I couldn't agree with you more. Donny had talent for The Forgotten, but with repetitive use of sound effects and too many like-elements, he has failed to keep interest after that first awesome track.
Current Value's 'End of Days' is such a sick track. Can't get enough of that end-of-the-world feel he has going. Real impending doom shit. I LOVE IT.
Anybody heard 'The Legend' by Technical Itch vs. Evol Intent? Some good ideas here.
Anybody wanna collaborate on a track like this? Do something really hard and nasty? I'm in the mood, lol

I personally haven't heard any limewax yet, but SPL is sorta hard. Something wrong with the production on his/her/its tracks, can't pick it.

thats right , though he has a good soundquality his tracks lack variation by his recycling of his samples.
to be honnest , many producers do that and sometimes without knowing the impact on the crowd.
Darkstep grew fast the last year and got many split styles
do some research

Limewax produces Limewax style.. can't be compared with any other producer in my opinion, his tracks have a soul, which is a great thing. Too many of those hard producers are just about proving you can make a mean and hard sound.
I find Limewax very inspiring at times (especially tracks like "One Of Them") which is not always the case with hardstep.

got a vinyl of his, the golden path, and when you play that track out loud the hardcore kick is MASSIVE, never heard anything like that:
hc - snare - kick - snare
snare - snare - snare - kick - snare
and again and again and again |
-->
hc - snare - kick - snare
kick - kick - snare - kick - snare

@ KreyZ
You = ignorant.
I've been here all of TWO months and I've only recently REALLY got into DnB, before then i produced Trance and Hard House and as you can probably guess, they were my listening styles at that time too.
I only know what I've heard and that has been Spor, Ewun, Evol Intent, Donny, Current Value, the odd DJ Fresh track and a few others. Give a noob a break.
Not meaning to get angry, but think about what you say before saying it.
