Please check out my new track 'The Evil Within (Instrumental Version)' and post your comments here!!!
This track is my first offering to you guys, as well as the first dnb track I've ever professionally made.
FL XXL v7, no external mastering and about 3 weeks.
Any feedback is more than welcome.

Congrats on your first tune here darkstar!!
Welcome!
You don't need anyone to tell you this is a super tune with a tight sound!! Crisp, tight beats. Gorgeous synth melody. You could probably do something more interesting to the sound tho, sounds a little standard at the mo.
Amazing bass sound!
Amen break edits are cool.
In fact, cool beat edits throughout the track - although perhaps too many. Would be nice for the beat stick to one pattern for a little longer during the first two-thirds.
I like the way the synth melody comes back near the end of the track. However, I really think this would be the point where you give it some variation.
Overall a wicked tune!!! Really pro sounding. Hope to hear more from you man!!

Not to boast, but this should be proof that FL is no weakling.
Who believes me when I say that 3osc made those lovely basslines? The twisting line was bounced and rinsed a number of times, but the distortion just 'clicked' perfectly.
Tomos, you have just made me the happiest 18 year old in Australia. Thank you so much for your constructive criticism!
Yes, I did do too much with the beat, unfortunately. I went a little too improv. I look forward to producing another track when I finish my final year of secondary school in a couple of weeks, really do something epic.
I wanted the track to evolve over time, but all that really ended up changing was the drums. I am very proud of it though.
First time I've ever EQ'd anything! Oh Yeah!
I'm looking to collaborate if anybody wants to take me onboard too.

Wow man, sick shit. Sounds very interesting although there are just a couple of things going on. The build up in the first drop is really well done, maybe a little bit too much silence.
Sick bass action, flows really sweet. Noisia influence is never far off.
Somehow I find it hard to believe that you never EQed anything before. You know too damn well about stuff and you talk producer slang as if you been in this thing for years

I kid you not.
My previous works have been dance, house and trance offerings with dabbling in breaks. But never anything like this.
Nice image Tomos. Made me and my mate laugh.
Noisia?! That makes me feel great! I listen to tons of their stuff but can't get their sound. I got my own
lol. I'm no bighead

i like to hear tracks from so far outside the U.K.
it proves this is a truly worldwide sound!
also gives me satisfaction to see it develop down all these years.
anyways.........
nice intro, but the bass hits before the drop need a tweak.
e.g...the last note before silence, put a soft delay on it so it fades
and echoes nicely rather than just reverb. also, turn the power of the reverb down on the reece bass.
beats are nice. some really nice edits and programming in parts.
eq is quite good, not perfect by a long shot tho.
i would take some bottom out of the kick,
it seems a bit too low and hides behind the bass too much.
on the kick, just use EQUO or parametric equlaizer to duck down the frequncies under 60hz or so and
slightly boost the the kick in the area just above the bass hit in the frequency, say 80/100 hz is usually key.
nice tune man. wicked for your first attempt.

How many of you producers are UK-based here? Am I alone in being Australian?

Alright, I'll see what I can do. Give me a couple of weeks for these changes, finishing school is occupying my time currently.

I worked on the drum sound for a fair while with this track, but I thought I did a good job of EQ'ing.
Somebody gonna help me out with the whole frequency thing? Don't make me go back through the noob posts, done that already. I need hands-on help. Maybe an FLP with Notebook explaining it a bit?

Major troubles in school atm, I won't get to produce anything until we finish, another 3 weeks yet. You'll see a lot more from me after then.
Watch out. I'm gonna make my mark here.

Time for the first massively repeated rewind session for ages. Darkstar, be sure to PM me link to your house/dance stuff, I want to hear where this all comes from....
Trance background is well shown in your way to build tension. Keep that up, start is a bit too slow motionless to my taste, try adding layers in similar way than you would do in trance, switching hi-hats etc on and off.
I gotta disagree with Amen edits, I think they rock, but I came from past decade when DnB was still not to be danced to, but to be listened, during that time there was something beyond Two-Step and the one making most twisting breaks was the king....
I also love what youre done with your bell sound, impressive editing.
I work on Cubase myself, and making similar edits you've done here are extremely slow and tedious to do. I just *need* to check FL sometimes, in case I need to switch.
And about EQ'ing, depending how you usually work, I would allmost say that fu*ck the frequency charts, you do not need em, those are for non-talented bods like me!
Do this:
1. Take a reference tune, which you like EQ-wise. Import it to audiotrack to your tune (if that's possible in FL, I suppose so).
2. Compare and Tweak!
This is the way my friend (House and Trance) works, he knows shit from anything, but he has _the_best_ear_in_the_whole_fucking_world_ and can tweak everything to perfection by just listening and comparing. I can't do that by myself, I am sure you can.
Been listening this like 5 times now, I am up to 5-10 more, really really impressive first try.
Generally I would add varying layers to everything, for example in 3:42 onwards you have used really low sub bass pad, I would have copies of that coming and going in mid area. Used sparsely, they would keep my intrest better and add up building tension.
But while we are at it, what do you do to get your bassline squeal like that? automated filter/LFO, what?
Ok, can't wait for your next one, I am sure it will be big.

GFC, I did that stuff a long time ago, I'd say 6 years. Made my first tunes in Modplug Tracker, never had them looked at by anyone else but me, moved onto FL in it's 3rd or 4th version, only recently got 7 and a new mindset has put me right here, what you are listening to right now.
I used to do a lot of trance, that is uncanny. Never had anybody pick that up. Not that it's a bad thing. But let me just make it clear that I'm strictly a DnB artist now, I want to break ties to my original works of old and start something fresh.
The 'Amen' break is a difficult thing to apply well because of the massive use it gets, but I only really wanted it to back this beat. I did most of the track (minus 'mastering', if you can call it that) in one night, but this is just me. I'll work 5, 6 hours straight on a track. I finish school in 2 weeks so I'll definitely be putting more time into sitting down and producing, for your listening pleasure of course
I did work on Cubase, but it got confusing for me. My microKONTROL had wars with Cubase, ideas weren't as easy as they are in FL to get down. I need that spontaneity. I loved the Cubase work environment though, very cool space to work in.
EQ... well, I did use a bit of a freq chart to sort of level out the drums and bass, a little on the quote (there is a good reason why it's called the INSTRUMENTAL VERSION guys
) but I am using semi-standard speakers, hell it sounded good to me.
This track, believe it or not, was made for assessment in one of my subjects. I have the presentation for my final work in a week's time, so this track was made on a schedule. Hence why I haven't 'finished' it as such yet. I will go through and tweak, layer, etc. when I am free as a bird in two weeks. Ah, I can't wait.
The bassline, well, that was a secret. That will require a PM...
Unless others express a profound need to know it RIGHT HERE...
