Macedonia is holding a day of mourning for one of the country's biggest stars, singer Tose Proeski, who died aged 26 in a car crash on Wednesday.
Thousands of his fans are expected in the town of Krusevo, where a funeral will be held shortly.
Proeski sang for the country in the 2004 Eurovision contest and won many awards in the nearby countries that were once part of Yugoslavia.
Police said the singer's car collided with a lorry on a road in Croatia.
Two other people were hurt in the crash.
After hearing the news, people across Macedonia took to the streets in mourning and parliament cancelled its session on Wednesday.
housands of Proeski fans later gathered in the capital, Skopje, lighting candles and placing flowers in makeshift shrines.
The tragic death of the singer is dominating the news in the tiny Balkan country, with TV and radio stations playing Proeski's songs back-to-back.
"We all couldn't help but love Tose Proeski," said Macedonian President Branko Crvenkovski, expressing his condolences to the singer's family.
"Macedonia and the Balkans lost an angel," said the head of the Macedonian Orthodox Church, Archbishop Stefan.
Proeski started his career aged 15, releasing his first album at 18.
He had several number one hits in four former Yugoslav republics - Macedonia, Serbia, Bosnia-Hercegovina and Croatia.
Among Proeski's hits were Cija Si (Whose Are You?) and Ako Me Poglednes Vo Oci (If You Look Me In The Eyes).
He sang both in Macedonian and in Serbian and was seen as a bridge between people in a region recently divided by ethnic conflict, correspondents say.

I've been reading about him today, never heard of him before. He was very popular, pity that he died at such a young age

Proeski had the best voice on the Balkans, and his potential (that should have been developed eventually) was compared to that of Pavarotti.
He donated a great amount of money for a new church in his home town, for a new clinic in Skopje for children with technical disabilities, and a new clinic in Bosnia, also for children with technical disabilities.
And he was only 26.
3 days before he died, he held a humanitarian concert to gather money for the children without parents. He gathered 20 thousand people there.
He went very young, indeed.
