I have noticed some engineers will watch the cone movement on the studio monitors when mixing down, what exactly would be the point of this? I was also listening to a podcast the other night and this producer says "Back when I didnt know much about compressors, limiters and eq I would watch the speakers in a club when my track was playing and the cone would be moving much more than other people tracks" I have noticed mine do the same thing, what exactly is going on with the mix and what fixes this, I always thought the more cone movement the more spl, but then I am thinking maybe its coloring the other sounds with so much movement, I don't know :/

I once heard from an engineer that when he mixes on NS10's; he watches how much the cones move to determine what the right amount of bass is. But that is particular to NS10's... and each speaker will have different characteristics. I have not been to a club recently where you could actually see the cones on the speakers. Obvioulsy the cones will move with more SPL because this is simply Sound Pressure Level, and the more of it the more the cones will move, but of-course bass frequencies will cause the cones to move more than they would with high frequncies. I have lost the point of what I am talking about because I am drunk and very very tired.
Has anyone got track I.D.s for the first two tracks on Danny Birds' set that is on the homepage of www.breakbeat.co.uk ?

Oh- and the point of watching the cones would be just to get a rough guesstimate of how much bass is in the track, because bass freq.s' will move the cones more than higher ones, and if the cone is moving roughly the same amount as a track you are trying to mix your track like, then they will both have roughly the same bass content
