How do you guys settle on a format for your song? I am not asking for suggestions but more of how do you arrive at your form.
I start off with an idea then i build drums, basses, noises, textures and can end up with a great number of tracks. Then I audition different tracks with each other and make notes of what really has a good feel or transition point.
i just can't settle on a final structure... which is way none of you have heard any tracks from me.
Music theory is applied to most of my stuff so randomness really doesn't work too well. Rondo form is something i really like but i haven't figured out how to make this work with drum'n'bass. (Rondo basically has contrasting themes which go back and forth then in the middle there is a long contrasting section then it returns to the contrasting themes... think of it like this: 1213121)
so... how do you arrive at your song form?

whoa man!
I've never approached my producing in any of those ways.. maybe if i did then i'd have made some better tracks.. lol
The truth be told i always start with an idea for a bassline.., the main drums follow then the intro drums (stange as that may seem) then its back to the main body of the track, then the breakdown, alwayz popping back to places to add or take away elements.
Inspiration for my tunes comes from an idea for a main bass 'hook' and drums' hook'.
the rest is all about centrilising that main theme..
i thank you and goodnight..

as long as the part before the drop is longer than the drop, it's good, IMHO. then the second drop is longer then the first drop.....

naaaaah!
ya should always start with your beats.
because as you know, the beats dominate the rythym of the track
so if you start pragramming some beats and they sound dark....you follow a dark theme.......if they sound lively and rolling...follow a dancefloor theme etc etc
if i dont have a major idea for my track before i start.....i just make some beats with no idealogical restrictions and then let it flow.
on structure....after the intro i prefer a longer drop so you could get into a groove..........breakdowns....2nd drop can be bit different but not essential......outro.
if you are the drummer dude then you should know that about the beats.

i just began two songs... one has some real potential and i have part of the automation done.
the other one i was working on today for someone hip-hop project... but it ended up being a dark, concord dawn like dnb tune. so i doubt the guy wants this song. i'm keeping it
i guess i am just really into making things too difficult.

my beats could fit with anything, could make them digital grime, old sounding, new, full, hard, that's the easy part man, it's the synths and how they sound.
best tip, is to write the song adn the ideas FAST and just get a whole song done. the you can take your time going over it and making it perfect. getting bogged down at the start, won't ever get you anything close to finish. you'll be stuck with a begning and maybe a drop. then you'll submit it as a preview, and just never look back.
by having a whole song, you'll be able to see where you're going at any part of the song, and make it a logical progression. and different ways of tiging in parts that don't sound like they fit
that is the true art of song writting.
not making things make rhythmaitc noise, but getting from A to B. all of music is about A:B. A is verse B is drop, A is rhythem B is melody, A is loud B is quiet, A is drum B is bass. A is the start of the song B is the end. to make them work is what we do.
so if you got an A and havent written the ending, B then you got nothing.
try it out. just make a fast song, then go over and make the drums better and the melodies have more change ups after, or fix the ones you just threw in.
the better part of it is, you won't be so bored with the song andw ant to listen to it. :/ how often i get bored of a song.
