Hi,
I was just wondering how to get maximum expression on a bass note.
Fore example, Calyx commonly use a Reese bass, but even though the same pitch note is played, there will be a number of ways they add expression to that note.
The way i think of it is imagining a mouth saying the bassline (if you get what i mean). Maybe a 'Boowapshiwaaw'. This expression would all be the same pitch but be a complex noise, and thats what i want to achieve.

Does anyone know any tutorials that show how to do this kind of stuff effectively? Im still a bit of a newb with this stuff... but hey, youve got to start somewhere!
Ill be uploading some of my tunes soon though, so you can feedback on them and tell me what you think, and hopefully ill be able to include some 'expressive' Reece basses

There is no real "How to sound like Calyx & Teebee", the is no new effect either, it's just put to perfection but it has been done by Gein, Corrupt Souls, Noisia, ...
Take a decent clean reece and change Cutt Off and Resonance on it in a way that makes it sound cool, you can add some soft distortion, overdrive, ... too, but make sure the bass still sounds atleast a bit like the basic reece. Save to audio. Do this in about 10 different ways with the same basic reece.
Find yourself a bassline using the basic bass sound.
Replace the different hits on the bassline by different instruments (being those saved-to-audio bass hits). Use glide effects, stutter, variations, whatever makes the bassline more exiting. Save this complete bassline as audio.
Reload the bassline as an instrument.
Do the final FX on this bassline, put them on 1 mixer channel (which should not go to the master) and split that out into 3 mixer channels. Use Filters to set these channels to the low-, mid- and highpart of the bass sound.
Leave the low part without FX, maybe compression if needed.
Put some medium distortion on the middle part, feel free to put some other stuff on it. If you want to have a stereo effect on your bass (normally this is not a good idea for bass) you can do it on the high end, set the stereo separation on this channel. You can add distortion and things on the high end as well.
Adjust levels of the 3 EQ channels to taste et voila!
For the choice of FX, bandwidths for the low,mid and high end I can't give a lot of advice. Try try try.

Indeed.
Cool stuff is made by endless trying, messing searching, tweaking ... not by following a manual.

Im not looking for a difinitive way to make good basslines, but a way to improve them. For a musician to compose a piece (or a producer to produce a decent bassline) he must first understand how it works and know the techniques.
I understand ive got to play around with it and 'trytrytry' and thats what i do. But i am looking for the tools and techniques to 'try' with, and with this basic knowledge i can experiment. You have to start somewhere!!
Thanks for the tutorial Battledrone, thats just what im looking for. Still got to try it out though.
Anyone else have any tutorials, or did you all just buy a synth and 'trytrytry' to perfection without reading any manuals/tutorials?

Dude, i understand i gotta experiment loads, but why sift through 1000s of words of technical language that i hardly understand when i can ask my fellow producers for help in laymans terms. Thats one of the reasons i joined the website because theres only so much you can learn from a manual. If we all had to discover everything for ourselves and didnt pass on any knowlege at all, then we wouldnt get too far.
Im not saying i dont read the manual, or 'trytrytry'... I DO! But i am just asking you guys for tips and techniques on how to get expression on my basslines, and how you as DnB producers achieve this.
Thanks

@Halph-Price: I mean a manual to "how to sound like Noisia" or something, not your DAW or plugin manual...

try playing with the attack for starters (all about the envelopes). and then start thinking about how your kick and bass work together. and remember to leave some space somewhere to let the speakers "recover"

Ive managed to get similar sounding "expression" by various stuff I tried, almost always involving rebouncing ang effecting again.
the sole fact various techniques sometimes give similar results is the answer to your question. there is no set rule, experimentation is key
reckon calyx works a lot over his sounds
