i find using a midi keyboard and playing them in,and then messing with the midi data to tighten it up and add tekky tricks afterwards tends to give them a bit more life than just programming them with a piano roll

try sidechaining a sub bass with a nice reece stab or womp sound or you could try using a filter vst such as a camelphat ,always gives a bit of life to a bline, alot of it is experimentation tho mate, sometimes i jus hit on freaky ass basslines by accident!jus keep pluggin away man, theres some wicked bass samples on this sites sample page and the wiki...also vst called a jungle synapse,my man 7g swears by it for a more wobble bass, ive used it to and it rocks..theres loads out there, also google is your freind try that..anywayz hope this helps, peace

Actually I´d like to hear an example of what you think is a bad bassline. I think a jumpy vivid bassline leaves little room to do something creative on top and gets boring really fast. If I listen to todays tracks (Commix, Rufige Cru, etc) the basslines are often just one note that is playing for several bars but the bass is an evolving sound which makes it sound alive. Listen to e.g. Talk to Frank from Commix or Infamous from Rufige Cru and you´ll get what I'm saying.
You could also add an LFO on the cut-off of the bass Like in Letting Go from Rufige Cru. Great for tension building.

Best quickstarts for a good bassline are loading up a good break and letting it loop and start messing with a synth or a sample and try untill you die Big Grin
You could also listen to some tracks with a great bassline and analyse what makes them so great and next try that on your own. There´s no magic formula, anything goes really.

add delays, falngers, or phasers to the mix. use it very sparingly and it will add a bit of a warble, this can help a lot. Detune can do the trick also.
