MOdern recording techniques will not really help you with making tunes in my opinion, ive read it a lot and does explain what everting is used for but it doesnt really get into electronic music production specifics that much, its more of a sound engineers read than a dnb produicers..
a book that was quite good is i think called "the dance music manual" (something like that), is pretty cool...

Computer Music is great, plus it comes with a DVD full of samples, software and tutorials.

yea the Moderern Recording, gives you analog and real equipment, but all the digital stuff is based off of that. it doesn't go into synth or anything. maybe anotehr book for synths.
but most magazines explain that. Computer Music is good for beginners, it has a lot fo basic tutorials, and previews, and explanations. i read thoes every month for 6 months, and learned most all i needed to know about synths. just get a few of them, and you'll get a good understanding.
but these are more porn than anything, glossy pcitures, and programs and synths you want to get, but really don't need. there's so much ad's in them.

My experience with VST's and samples that come with mags are that they are mostly far below average and useless...

find ones that have interviews with producers. that's where you learn the most. the pro mags down to the amature ones have the interviews, that's where you get the pimp production tip,s you won't find in ANY book.

sound on sound is much better than computer music in my opinion... just dont trust the ads or "reviews" in any of these mags, they are all backhanders , i.e. full of shit
