OK I am new here and to the genre as a whole, but I LOVE everything that I have heard so far (thanks dnbradio.com and numerous "raves")

it sems as though everything follows the same beat sequence, and it could be just what i've heard, or listen to, or that we are wired to hear 4x4. Has anyone done something catchy out of the traditional 4x4 (if that makes sense)

If I sound like a total idiot because I can not get across what I am trying to say, don't be an asshole. I am trying to learn and embrass something new and my terminology might not be correct.

either way, thanks.

sure there is stuff that doesn't have a 4/4 signature. But most commercial DnB has to be very dancefloor-friendly and thus following the standard structures.

Look around on myspace, you'll soon find people doing things differently. Especially in downtempo (dubstep) there is a lot of variation going on (good starting point)

check out some chase n status for catchy tracks with a slightly different ragga influenced half beat.
also some early twisted individual tracks.
limewax could be your answer.

some producer names as to what beat you are
refering to would be helpful?

12/8 can be played in groups of 3 or 4... which is usually what you hear on the radio.

or you can play it as 7+5 or 5+7... it does make a difference.

a common polyrhythm i hear in some commercial dnb is 3:4 ( carol of the bells... the christmas song... is 3:4)

i often program percussion in a different phrasing sometimes in odd groupings ( like 7+5) just put your accents in different places.

wobbly basslines... more often than not the wobble is in 3 and the groove is 4
Mista Dool's tune Too Late has a great example of this, listen to the whole tune.

if you are looking for stuff in 19,23, 5, etc... you probably will not find it... if you do it won't be a prominent piece on the dance floor.

i have been playing the drum set for 14 years so if anyone wants to know more hit me up.
