Please check out my new track 'Hallucinating' and post your comments here!!!
Hey guys, this is my first track here. I finished it about 2 weeks ago and, in fact, this is one of the first Drum 'n' Bass tracks I've ever made. The whole thing was done in about 3 days on my laptop using FL Studio 7 (Producer edition), which I bought only 3 months ago.
As you'll no doubt quickly realise, my production skills are pretty poor. I'm no way near you guys in terms of production quality... so please bear that in mind.
The influences for the track come mainly from the long basslines you used to find in tracks by the likes of Ed Rush and Optical. I'm also a big fan of metal music, and that comes out in this track too.
Anyway, please do let me know what you think - good, bad or whatever.
This track has been deleted on the producer's request

Well, you should have heard my first track
The track is way too long for a first one, better make more tracks and shorter ones, that way you can improve faster, normal DnB is 6-7 minutes.
It all starts off pretty well, but the bass that appears at approx 45" is way to loud and it pushes the drums into the background, in fact it covers everything. You might want to lower the volume on that instrument, equalise the high area out (above 1000 Hz should be lowered).
The drop is ok, second part is a bit rougher.
I can't judge what you did really as it is mostly hidden underneath your bass. Seems that you actually did a good job, please fix this and upload it again.

Thanks for your comments Battle, much appreciated.
I'm having great difficultly getting the levels right. When I first made the track I was wearing headphones the whole time, swapping between a pair of Senneiser HD 201 & Senneiser HD 215 headphones (which, as you probably know, sound massively different). I then burned the track to a CD and played it through two mid-quality car stereo speakers. I got the impression on both that the bass was too quiet and there wasn't enough clarity. So I went back into FL Studio and turned the bass up and put it through some effects (chorus & flanger) to liven it up - and now it's too loud, even though I'd probably consider it a tad too quiet if played through speakers.
Somebody please tell me - what's the best method of getting all the levels right and ensuring that the track sounds good through a variety of speakers? Is it just a case of trail and error, or is there a 'proper' method?
PS. Yes, I know 9 mins is far too long really. Any ideas on how I could reduce it a bit?

now i personally like the bassline because you don't hear anylike that and it's got it's own lo-fi sound that i find enjoyable. only because taht cool intro.
the long bassline thing is cool. with headphones on it's got a cool sounding motion.
a tip on to make this bassline have more bottem, is to clone the bass insturment, and send one to another fx track. take the orginal distorted one and use an EQ to remove all the bottem end from 300hz and down. if you can change the cloned, clean bassline, to just one sine wav or whatever it is you're using to make it. but usually you can change the wavform. a sine would be good.
you got the drum part down and that's important for this music genre. you got good style, don't worry about the production it'll come to you.

Wow, thanks.
This is exactly the sort of advice I need. I haven't got a clue when it comes to the technical stuff so this is seriously helpful. Shit, I don't even know what some of the terms mean!
Anyway, I'll work on this track some more and try and get the levels right based on the advice you've given. It may take a little while but I'll upload it once it's done.

good effort for your first try.
i agree with most about the bass
(too loud and muddied).
also, try make the tune shorter,
i upload tunes at 5/6 minutes for easier listening.
you should have asked someone for an fruity zip
file, to show ya where everything is and what to use and how.
in fact i'll give ya one myself.
have a play around, hope it helps..........

ya a few new tricks.
hope it helps.
