there are only 2 places i have ever worn earplugs.
valve soundsystem in leeds and sub dub in leeds.
both earbleeding heavy systems.
and when i'm mixing down my tunes at FULL BLAST!!!

if you cannot hold a regular, dinnertime level conversation, then it is too loud. you can get ear dmg from prolonged duration. concert levels though, can cause ear dmg right away.
there's a time period until you get ear dmg, because the ear drums shift to act as a natural gain reduction, to prevent dmg. it can react fast, and sharp fast sounds dmg more then a long loud blast.
with one beer, your reaction time is pretty much gone entirly. wear earplugs if you can't talk to anyone around you. your mind gets use to the level and you don't evne notice they are in.
you can even talk to people close by easier. it just stops more fo the stupidly high end. you still get all the bass, and a more mid because the high pitch sounds drown out the lower ones.
so there's a convention of of music and movie people. to do a test of heraing the guy goes to play that loud 20khz wave, and when he does everyones whices in pain to the high pitch sound. he then goes, "oh somethings wrong it's not playing ... ok, there we go" and the sound starts.
