I'd use a noise gate for that.

Noise Gate Extrapolator you can find them in the hammer section at most hardware stores. They're generally red with a rubber grip. Use that twice a day.
I have 2 of them one for coarse, and one for more detailed Extrapolutions.

you can use Adobe Audition to remove background noise. but, mostly when you have 2 sounds playing at the same time it's said that they are "Married" and there's not much you can do to seperate them. it comes down to which is louder and what freq they fill.
if it's a deep noise in the background yuo can just cout out the bottem end. if it's sometihng like traffic, or something like white noise, it's just part of the sound. a gate would help, but you'd still hear the noise when the vocal went.
just work with the background noise, if you layer it with your OWN background noise, you can drown out the quiter background noise in the sample. for music that works good.

Latest sound forge has some good noise removal and reduction tools, otherwise, the Waves plug-ins; xnoise, xhum, xclick etc are top notch for removing noise and other sh*t that gets into recordings.

you just set a threshold on the noise gate, no signal below that threshold then passes through. Jus set it nice and low to remove microhpone hiss and crap like that, ones in sound forge and audition work fine but i'd try and get hold of waves xhum, xnoise etc, they clean up recordings to the max.
