well the Shure SM57 is pretty good, has a good sound and its a directional mic so you wont pick up tons of ambience, it comes with a few lil attachments to further exaggerate the directional effect and a wind baffle as well :p

if you want the ambience then the Shure SM58 is good, nice simple vocal mic and it comes with a wind baffle

both mics are around 79 quid each, so theyre not overly expensive Smile

sounds like you will want a condenser. Samson makes mic that is only sold in pairs... co2 condenser mic. they have really good on axis sound (right in front of it. but if you are going to use them as overhead mics for drums they will kill your mix. right now i have been using my AKG c1000s mics for overheads, vocals, acoustic guitar. they work great... maybe a little excessive sizzle and 'tak" sound but if you run it through an eq or eq it in your DAW then it should be fine.

shure ksm series are great as well. MXL is a good choice, nice punchy vocals.

id recommend the Sennheiser ME66 rifle mic, used it loads for recording sounds outside when recording sounds for film, 'softie' wind shield that comes with it is pretty effective too.

for me, to record ambience of areas i use a Crown PZM condesner mic. it records in a semi-hemisphere and everything is from a reflection so there's no diret sound. it just records the ambiance. it's really good to use this to add other sounds on top, or for recording say a choir of vocals.

you can move futher away from it and get more room and it sounds very natural. it looks odd and most people won't tihnk it's amic you can just set it down plug into a minidisc player or ipod, or anything, and just record.

diretional mics are good but how fucking weird must you look. like some inept spy? but yea, PZm's are hardly recognizable and pick up AREA's better, and it just has a nice smooth ambiance recording. maybe not what you want if you want to record ppl's conversations, then go for a directional hyper cardiod 'shotgun' mic.

japan would have some crazy ambince i bet. but yes, a PZM mic is easy and unothadox. no one will suspect you're recording them even best. you can hold it, there light mics, very small diaphrams, just the paddle that the sound reflects off of takes up any room. but there light usually plastic bodies. cheap, you can get them as low as 100 $CND.

i wouldn't suggest a SM58 or any cardiod dynamic mic, you'd be best getting a condenser of some sort. uni-directional or semi-hemisphere like the PZM. for ambience you don't need that great of quality.

i use this budget one. the only down side, is the 10k is a bit harsh, but it's nice for ambienc ei had recorded.
