Hey guys, brand new here so thank you in advance for any advice you can give me.

I'm on the verge of taking the music production plunge and wanted to know if my soundblaster Audigy 2 is up to the task.

Will I be fine or should I upgrade?

It's sure good enough to start out with, but in time you might want to consider upgrading to a sound card with a more flat frequency response and that offers you more in&outputs, and more control over them.

If you allready want to upgrade now, check out m-audio, terratec and EMU.

[edit] I have an audigy 2 platinum myself for a few years now, and it's a good sound card, but there is better gear on the market by now.

i had an audigy that i got used that didnt have the interface.i could never get it to work.so i got the audigy 2 with the interface with it. Big Grin it has midi, fire wire, rcas, and im not sure what else.guitar and mic input maybe?i havent used it much but it will be great to record with.so even if you have the first one its still a great sound card imo.

Besides the non-flat frequency response, which makes it difficult to produce music that sounds the same on other sounds systems, there's another thing you should be aware of: ASIO support. I don't know how well your card is supporting ASIO, but it's really better to have a card that suports it (or even ASIO2).

ASIO (Audio Stream Input/Output), developed by Steinberg, is a cross-platform, multi-channel audio transfer protocol that is being adopted by many of the manufacturers of audio/MIDI sequencing applications. It allows software to have access to the multi-channel capabilities of a wide range of powerful sound cards.

Basically it is much faster, so it reduces the time between a press on the keyboard and the sound being played (sometimes as low as 2ms)

its supporting asio well, shabby but usable

the real problem is the adda converter which is a bit crap in all creative cards, as battledrone said, gives you a non-flat frequency response (colored)

If you don't have an audio card that supports ASIO, you can find the asio4all software emulator which works miracles with the response times of your hardware. www.asio4all.com

I've been using it for some time now, it really is helpful.

er. no, actually if it doesntr support asio, no software drivers can magically make it

the drivers help as theyre better asio optimized than the standard creatives.

you get an asio driver when installing cubase too Wink

that asio emulator is good for a laptop solution, i use asio4all on my laptop because its piece of shit soundcard doesnt want to run cubase... i wouldnt buy a new soundcard for my laptop anyway.. maybe its a good way to start with that asio emulator and keep your soundcard because you are probably not going to mix down on your computer anyway at the start you usually just try to make cool sounding stuff and it will take you a while to get experience anyway... but hey if you have the money then buy wat you need first... soundcard and monitors are always a good buy... i wouldnt start to serious either.. if you are gonna go for it... you get used to the sound anway and are able to hear how to mix if you have the monitors long enough and hear your shit on other speakers.
