just wondered if anyone else struggles coming up with ideas for breaks? i can constantly come up with ideas for the drop, the actual tune, different beats, bass etc but when it comes to the break theres nothing there - its not the sort of thing u can get excited about, until you get to the build up etc. im not asking for people to help me with ideas, just wondered if anyone else has this problem.

I'm more the opposite of that actually. I'm always messing with breaks and basses, but I hate a drop or a buildup. I rarely finish anything, but a break is less work and thus easier to finish.
I recently made a break from the default drumkit in FL and filtered, EQed,... until you can't hear that no break was sliced to make it.
Actually you can get away really easy. Just use the amen and highpass it to have some ghosty stuff and drop some oneshot snares and bassdrums on top and your halfway.

I loved the challenge of this approach. It's a difficult path, but it can be done.
Actually it should be a compo someday

It isnt really the easiest thing as the break is really everyting in a tune if its poor and not catchy or bass does not connect with the drums it ruins the track.
Will give these ideas a go.

my default opening screen is 2 layers both connected to samples each, minimum for kick and snare, respectivly. then 3 slicers above, and usually the first thing i put in them is a break.

when i layer my breaks i use a kik and a snare from midi.that way i can get the necessary volume from them.(as well as sidechaining)the rest is breaks chopped.ill match up my beats(snr kik)and use the snr roll and kik snr to fill in the grooves.yeah it wont sound right without out some warmth(dist) and compression(not to much),so dont forget that you have to process some stuff to get the sound you want.layer chop process repeat (infinitely)till you cant take it any more.

i don't even know which i start with, the kick and snares, or the breaks. i think i start with the kick and snares, then depending on how fucked up it is, i'll get a break.
then sometimes i layer more breaks on top of that and some hats. check out my track to hear that in action.
