I have a pair of Tabla.

75GBP might be a little low, considering the estimates I'm getting with currency converters puts that at about $170CAD. I paid just over $200CAD for mine, IIRC. They're a basic set and the sound is decent. You could probably find a place in North America that will ship them to you if you're willing to spend a bit more than 75GBP.

One thing I should tell you, though... the Tabla are one of the most difficult percussion instruments to take up. To learn properly, you're supposed to sign up for lessons - I know of people with the Indian musical background taking up to 20 years to become proficient Tabla players. I've been playing for a year, and I can get the drums to sound differently but can only play very basic, slow rhythms (sounds great with acoustic guitar though). What I can do is fine for sampling my own playing, but to actually LEARN how to play the Tabla takes serious commitment and years of your time.

Yeah Knives is right, they are absolutely impossible to play. They have a couple of tablas at my former job and I tried to play them dozens of times but never managed to get a decent sound out of them. You end up thinking they are badly tuned, but it is all a matter of applying the right amount of pressure and proper wrist movement. Or maybe I'm just not Indian enough to play them Big Grin

Yea i know theyre hard, but i like a challenge :p im pretty good with a djembe and have played a darbouka a few times, not to mention the endless drumming on desks when im bored Tongue
I just want something to do with me hands and if they take 20 years to get good at then i guess thats 20 years where i keep me hands busy :p

And well, its what learning an instrument is all about, commitment and time :p

Good attitude. I don't mean to discourage you from learning them, just pointing out that they're easy to get frustrated with, and if you want to learn 'properly' (eg: formally), you should get a teacher.

They're the kind of drum that you'll try all sorts of different strokes on because you can't seem to get 'the right sound' out of them, and then all of a sudden you'll get that perfect stroke... but you won't be able to recreate it for a little while afterwards because you're not entirely sure exactly what you did. It takes longer than other percussion instruments I've used (djembe, bongos, congas, etc.) to get even the basic strokes right.

But you sound like me; I like a challenge. I had a lot of spare time in the summer so I got my preferential techniqe with the Tabla down - I actually play them 'backwards', as I find it easier to do finger-strokes on the high (small) drum with my left hand, and easier to manipulate the skin on the low drum with my right wrist. This is COMPLETELY wrong, according to traditional formal teaching, but I can make decent sounds with the drums and keep a basic rhythm. I'll probably never have the hummingbird-fast fingers that some of the well-known Indian players do, but I'm content with what I can play.

Good luck!

Something i feel i might have a problem with is that :p You gotta play the equivalent of the snare with the right hand, but i see now that it is because the right hand needs to be much faster :p

I'm gonna try n keep as close to proper technique as i can, and i too know ill never be as fast as the pros, but i dont mind, i like the slower stuff anyway Smile

tabla's are extremely hard to play, and if you hear pro tabal palers they do the same rhythem over and over again, which is skill enough. there are hundreds of rhythems to know and learn.

the pitch bending boops, that they do, that are an octave bend, canb e imitated with samples too. but to play it is such a delicate matter. i suggest finding a teacher, he'd know where to get them Wink

england must have some network with india for the instruments still.

i found out my school has some tabla drums so i had a go today and theyre friggin awesome Big Grin

I picked it up pretty good, the dayan (small drum) is pretty easy to play but the bayan (big drum) is pretty tricky, you need to be soooo precise and you need to be quite gentle with some of the strokes, that boop sound halph-price is talking about is reeeally hard to do, but i was sorta gettin the hang of it after a couple of hours Smile

if i get me own set and i get a bit better at it ill make you lot a sample pack Smile
