I make drum n bass in Reason 3, and use Ableton 6 to mix and process the sound with plugins and shit. The problem I have is, I don't quite know how to make the bass just right like the bass in a Noisia mix, or a Calyx or TeeBee mix. Can someone please tell me what I can do to get a nice fat, rich sounding bass in reason or ableton? or is there a site that has a free or possibly cheap synth to make good bass with? I appreciate any help on this!!!!

I already know about the layering, and eqing part, and compression and all that fun stuff. I'm just wondering if someone could give me a basic setup to make a bass sound with Reason 3. Pretty much what instruments to use, the subtraktor or maelstrom, and what should the basic settings be?

i start out with two detuned saw/square waves as top layer. a low pass fiterd saw beneath it and third sinus at the bottom. a bit of reverb, chorus, phaser on the top layer.
right velocity settings and a lil bit of eqin to make it sound like one piece

that about sums it up for the setup, you MUST use side chain compression to make the bass(as well as the kick and sometimes snare)) "sit" right with the rest of the mix.the scream distortion blended lightly also helps.for the filters i would use a combination of high and notch (sweeping).you must automate the filters to get them sounding right.at the end of allllllllll the effects you put on be sure to add a compressor to limit the output(unlimited filters make for nasty peaks),but turn the track level down so it dosent completely squash the bass dynamics.you only want the squealing highs to be contained by the limiter.have fun!!!!!

So after a day in Reason, I found out that everything I create sounds like shit. I really just want that Noisia b-line. Everday I hear it, which is everyday, I want to create it myself more. I read up about how they just layer eq and layer and shit, but mine just sounds like crap. Is it Reasons shitty subtraktor? or is it me, cause I've heard some fat basslines created from Reason, I just cant tweak it right. Is there maybe a soft synth that I can download for free, or maybe buy for cheap that can create that B-line sound badass (I have a G% MAC by the way). Appreciate any tips or links or even just info.

P.S. Im trying to learn how to do it the common way so I can fuck it up my way, originality is key....please help me!

Don't give up and don't panic.
Noisia is really no shit, they didn't create that sound in a day, so how could you? Creating something like that needs time, knowledge and hard work.
You can't create such a bass from a quick how-to manual. You need to experiment and read a lot about how this shit works and experiment a lot more and be glad with every bit of progress you make.
Imagine you play basketball for a whole day and complain afterwards that you're not yet as good as Michael Jordan (or any other player of that calibre) people would laugh about that.
If you're there in a year you've done a god job.

all you need is a sampler, a synth and some fx devices. you can do it with reason but dont think you can make it in a few weeks or month. producing those bass sounds needs a lot of experience and practise...

use the effects and modulations(like filter-freq and res; mod-wheel; pitchwheel;...) on the devices themselfs (like subtractor,..). play with them during the bass note. record in realtime or draw them out. you'll see or hear that you'll get there pretty quickly. use or dont use distortion (like scream) and/or other effects allongside the first device to crunch it up or give it a twisted taste. then ballance, EQ , compress,... to finalize… make sure the overal freq's dont interfere with other sounds unless they're sounding great, dont get at the red freqs or when sounding mushy. Thats it for the reason-approach (for me tough).
cheers

yeah, I can make bass in reason. I took production classes, just looking to get that noisia sound. I figured a few things out, and I'm trying them all now. I will post the results soon.
