sounds very technical.

Yeh Ive heard of it, never used it tho. Its just a tracker. Maybe ask B complex, I think he knows about tracker software.
I wouldnt say you need to use tracker software to make IDM stuff. By its own definition, IDM is experimental dance music. and so the options are limitless as to what you can use. Id recomend you use whatever software you find most comfortable with, and whichever programme you feel you can push the limits and explore techniques. There are people who use renoise, V snares for example. There are people who use Pro tools like Tim Exile. There are people who use mostly hardware like squarepusher. Aphex has been known to use Amiga software. Ive heard anazing IDM written on music 2000 on the playstation.
Basically, if you have no idea how to work renoise then dont use it. Use whatever software ur used to and explore the little features and find out exactly what its capable of.

Renoise, i've got some manuals printed out around here somewhere...
Aaron Funk (Venetian Snares) uses it, this is one of his songs played in Renoise
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zGK-EzEa45U
Personally I wouldnt bother with the software, TechDiff might have a different opinion on it.. I do write a little IDM, not so much anymore...
Im very keen to check out TechDiff now you all mention ....

I used to make music in programs like this for years... It realy took me a while to get used to modern environments like Reason or FL.
It's hard labour programming in such a tool, but when you know how everything works it's damn easy and fast to work with. Wouldn't have a clue how one should lay out a break in that though

If you have music theory knowledge, IDM comes naturally
