Hi guys.
I am planning to buy some ram for my gf's pc, but I'm in really great doubt as to what type of module to buy!
Her chipset is VIA KT400, and I was reading about it on several places on the net to know what type of RAM module to buy, and found out that this chipset supports:
1. DDR400 SDRAM
2. PC3200 (DDR400)
Now, what's the difference between these two (if there is any) and what exact type of RAM should I buy now?

You can put in 400MHz DDR modules too. It works fine, they will simply be clocked at 333MHz.

Oh. And how can I find out if it supports DIMM modules because all I can buy here are DIMM memory type? Following the logic here, I guess that chipset has DIMM slots because it's a standard, right?
@thechronic: are you sure it will work downscaled to 333 MHz?
Thanx guys

I can say yes to the question: the RAM will be running at 333 MHZ....

There are also some other kinds of memory slots in use in mostly older pc's, but it's worth checking before you buy it. If you know the type of motherboard and look it up on the manufacturer's website, it should tell you.

different dimm set up.....
from the live given on VIA, i could say that your MB take "DDR200/266/333 SDRAM"
so ask for a ddr 333MH dimm, and you're sorted mate... otherwise, as explained before, you can run 400MH as well, but won't be fully ran, so maybe a waste of money....

Thank you guys!

carefull with the value ram, the kingston value ram low latency(2.5's) can't handle heavy applications. not sure what your using that pc for though.if it's for just day to day use the value stuff is fine, anything other then that though i wouldn't bother with it...if you run multiple applications it will seriously bog down...if your using it for any kind of video/audio editing or gaming get good ram..it will surpass any other improvment besides a 300-400 video card...always get corsair XMS pro myself....

get a matched pair of 512(1gig) and you will get even better performance.or you could just get a matched pair of 256(512).either way get a matched pair.they give so much more when they are matched!!kingston is good;so is pny(the best).you get what you pay for keep that in mind.

I once benchmarked 1GB of 800MHz DDR2 Kingston Value Ram (5-5-5-15) against 1GB of 800MHz DDR2 Geil Ultra (4-4-4-12). Both running in dual channel, benchmarked LAME encoding and a game. The difference was less than 1%. I'm not wasting money on high performance RAM anymore, it's not worth it, better get 2GB of KVR than 1GB of high performance RAM imo.
