Is it connected directly onto your motherboard or through a addon card? Do you have any other harddrives in your system? Have you used/formatted the drive before? As far as I know SATA drives do not need any specific drivers.

yup, directly. theres a sata controller integrated through the south bridge.
I have my old ata drive as a system drive.
no I haven't formatted before, it's a new drive. I HAVE tested the motherboard with an already formatted sata drive before and it worked fine

Better stay away from Maxtor drives, I've had several broken harddisks and it were always Maxtors. If you want reliable fast drives try Western Digital RE-series, they are a little bit more expensive but I have never had any problems with them.

u use messaging software? aim?
I decided to fiddle around with it a bit more before I take it back. so I took that maxblast 4 software from their site and made a bootable cd with it. that thing tells me its not a 200gb drive but a 136?!
ok so I formated but now windows install (service pack 2 version) hangs when its detecting a drive. moy old installation on the ata drive just won't start if the new drive is connected, it just hangs after the loading screen

hhmmm no AIM, I'm at work.... blocked by proxy..
However, that doesn't sound so good that the tool show as a 136 instead os 200...
seems faulty to me.....bad block or the low level format is fucked up, and trust me, you don't want to go down that way....
Replace the drive man...
