Hi everyone, fairly soon i should be getting a PC here in me room to put cubase n reason and all that sorta thing on to, but in the meantime ive got this lil laptop and a cheap-ass microphone...
I'm just looking to put down some rough ideas on my guitar, and am looking for a free to download program that has a sequencer window, preferably bars/beats format, and has a metronome... ive got audacity but that doesnt have that :p

basically does anybody know of well, i guess u could call it sort of a Diet Cubase?
just a simple sequencing program thats freeeeee

(i dont know if this exists, but if theres on with MIDI capabilities and can even load VSTs, thatd be even better
)

cheers

I make all of my stuff at school in a rather nice studio on a rather nice rig
but its being knocked down soon to make room for an even bigger and better studio and will be out of action for a long time

i have no sound setup at home yet, so until i do this is my option

properly ghetto recording studio worth a total of about 2 quid, which is how much i payed for the microphone :p

i can get a copy of cubase from school, but it would kill this laptop for sure lol, cheers for ur help neway dude

well if the laptop wont even run cubasis then you might as well not bother. erm. u could maybe get away wth running wavelab or an old version of cool edit. but you would still nedd some kind of sequencer. reason should be ok.
but maybe if you pposted the spec of the laptop it might help....

do you even have a soundcard or u planning on using the one built in?? if so whats the point!! the guitars gonna sound shit (unless your going for a lo fi fourtet esque thing)

i cant see the point in nagging about a laptop with 1,7ghz not being powerful enough...

minimum cpu for cubase sx3 is 800mhz.. so i doubt it would kill that laptop.. it might have a stutter here and there, and that's it...

      look into trackers.
They have a steep learning curve but I can't even begin describe how much they're worth it.
I use Renoise 1.8, which isn't free, but, Renoise 1.1 is, and there's a crapload of other trackers that are also entirely free.
Usually, their sound quality far surpasses most "professional" sequencers as well.
Look.into.trackers.

Free, easy as fu*ck, fun as hell:

http://www.kreatives.org/kristal/index.php

-but no MIDI or VST synth support, only VST effects and audio recording.

Then you can get the whole computer music studio - with british Computer Music magazine DVD. Allmost free ( £10 or similar for the mag ), comes with Full MIDI support, HUGE set of good VST synths (including full fledged sampler), effects etc etc. Not so easy to use than Kristal but much much more comprehensive.

http://www.computermusic.co.uk/

And finally, I did receive Ableton Live Free 4 with my cheap USB sound card. It is quite modest cut down version from full Live 6, but I absolutely love it, it's pure inspiration - I use it ReWire daisychained to Cubase SX all the time
So check your CD's that came with soundcard.

Oh, forgot to mention, theyre sometimes giving special editions of commercial sequencers free on their DVD, for example Zynewave Podium on Mag 110:

"ON THE DVD
• EXCLUSIVE free DAW for PC: Podium!
Zynewave’s Podium has been causing quite a stir recently with its powerful feature set, innovative interface and intuitive routing system, and this month we’re giving you the full 1.77 version (the only thing missing being the zReverb effect), as originally sold for $90! This amazing VST-compatible MIDI/audio sequencer is truly essential viewing for all PC musicians and yours only with this issue of Computer Music."
