ive been playing with the nomad rock amp thing http://www.nomadfactory.com/products/rockamp/index.html
tends to make everything sound very guitar but you can make some cool effects by layering just the higher freqs of your bass into it.. also it has some wicked reverb and feed back but beware it uses some serious cpu

My distortions don't sound as I want them to either, that's why I'm going to buy some guitar pedal distortions. Nice analogue shit
Software distortion always sounds too digital.

Beware of recording guitar distortion pedals directly into the computer. Most of them sound horribly buzzy. You'll need a good speaker simulator, or even better a guitar amp and a microphone.
Line 6 have a couple of good distortion units with built-in speaker simulator.
For software, I like the Amp Farm TDM plugin, but it is not for sale anymore...

I think you can try Predatohm. Really nice, plenty of options.
PSP Vintagewarmer could be good as well, but for a really light distortions.
Cheers

If your looking at getting nice guitar distortion its worth having a look at the line 6 stuff. Ive had one of the PODs for years and its got some great sounds and its so easy to use. But if your looking for the real thing, Some of the Marshall valve amps have a simulated speaker output so you can plug staight into a mixer, and it sounds pukka. Or there is their JCM1 which is a rack mounted preamp which also sounds nice. Dont know what theyd sound like for other stuff, but for guitars you just cant beat marshall!

I think QuadraFuzz and other ones i've mentioned before are good for guitars. What I am lookin for is bass distortion (reece's, 808 kicks etc.)
It should sound evil
Thanks a lot for posting ppl

youve tried various distortion units, but have you tried some imagination ?
like, adding more than one unit, splitting the signal to different bands and distorting each separately, chaining other fx with distortion, eq etc etc.

So you can have a nice discussion between tube distortion and transistor distortion?

I use Blood Overdrive Fruity Plugin...
(I predict the future, and it says that someone will throw tantrum about this plugin)

Software distortion always sounds too digital. |
third time i have heard you plug the distortion pedals and analog clipping.
try doing that example though and layer the warm dist of the Tube AFTER some crappy distortion.
also check out TriDirt a free multi band distortion, different styles of distortion, free!
ya, camel phat is good too,
so is PSPsaturator,
and VintageWarmer
oh and the Fruity Overdrive isn't too shabby.
iZatope Trash is more of a rauncher sound.
ROCKAMP is another one like Trash
and Amplitube too.
Quadrafuzz for one of the best multi-band distortons, glitchy in Fruity Loops though.
Buzz MAchines RYG Analog Distortion is very nice.
Cyanide2 is another free overdrive one, that let's you draw the shape, but also has 16x oversample. a very good plugin, by smartronix, i tihnk, they do a lot of nice free vst's, including reverb and compressors. i suggest checking them out
DOMINION by digitalfishphones is a good exciter.
Also another name for good distortion, is Saturation, or Exciters. Exciters are even harmonic distortion, which happens from tape or tube saturation. this si why that's prefferedd...

I don't say digital distortions don't have their uses, but if you take a lowpassed reece and distort it with a digital distortion, like the Anteres Tube, it sounds digital. Combinating distortions can help indeed, it can also make everything a big muddy mess. It's not easy...

ah yes, if you layer on distoritons, make sure the first one is a bit less hot, or distortied, than you want. you need to give headroom for the other distortion.
this can happen with analog clipping on SS distortion pedals too.
