There are so many producers of Drum'n'Bass in the Netherlands. And so little productions make their way onto vinyl and into the record stores. What is the key to achieving this?

Well, the guys from Noisia evidentially posess that key because not only their productions are continually signed by major record-labels, their performing-schedule is getting filled up pretty quick as well.

Wether it's their talent, their skills, their contacts or just luck we don't know but what we do know is that it's time for an interview!

Who are Noisia?

Thijs de Vlieger, 22 years old and a student in philosophy
Nik Roos, 21 years old, academy of arts
Martijn van Sonderen, 20 years old, academy of music

We've known each other for about seven years now, as a matter of fact it started with graffiti and skating. Noisia began making music just to have some fun, and Nik (who was called 'DJ Spooncontrol 3500' in those days) made music together with Thijs by beating wooden spoons on other objects, and taping that. In this process, a lot of spoons were smashed into scratch.
Nik and Thijs were already 'Noisia' when Martijn joined in. It started being more serious when we found out that people really liked the things we made. After that came some releases. Then Martijn bought some turntables, and we started to do DJ'ing as well.

Within Noisia, who does what?

We produce our music together, that does not mean that everyone always has as much to say about each tune as the others, but in the end we all contribute to each project. We all have a personal bedroom set-up, so we can all start tunes and work on them solo or with the two or three of us. Thijs and Martijn are the ones who DJ when Noisia performs somewhere. Moreover, Martijn produces some nice hiphop, and Nik is very creative in designing flyers.

By which producers and what music were you influenced in the past? And nowadays?

As a matter of fact we were always influenced by Ed Rush & Optical, Bad Company, Stakka & Skynet, Matrix, Cause 4 Concern, Teebee, Synthetix, really all pioneers in Neurofunk and Technoid Drum'n'Bass. We used to listen much to programmes such as 'Elementaal' and 'Het Lek op 3FM' where sometimes Drum'n'Bass was played. Nowadays, the producers who have the most influence on us are Teebee, Gridlok, Optiv, Cause 4 Concern and Phace.

On which festival would like to play at some point in the future?

Lowlands!

When does your website, www.noisia.nl, finally go online? And what will be on this site?

Well, we had little time to do that. Before long, Nik will be working on the site and when it all goes according to plan, it'll be online before the autumn leaves fall. Properly speaking, it will be a site you visit once and then leave for a few months. The more general things will be on it, such as a biography and contacting information. And probably some mixes which contain new productions.

According to you, where runs the line between commerciality and Drum'n'Bass?

When the public increases, that does not mean the scene will get more commercial. Commerciality also by definition does not mean that music will become worse, that depends on the producers. It is not right that producers should make music that is liked by the people, on the contrary, people should like what producers make.

What websites, which are not known by people, are interesting to visit?

Shadowlaw is a nice site by a cool label.
Most of the time, we can be found at DSCI4, because there is a good forum.
Armada Recordings' website is not finished yet, but it is a very cool label and the site is going to be very cool too.

With whom would you perhaps like to cooperate in the future?

BSE, Gridlok, Teebee, Ed Rush & Optical, Optiv, Cause 4 Concern, Desimal, Pendulum and Matrix.

Which of your performances was the best in your opinion?

Moscow! Our biggest performance ever with more than a thousand people who danced as if they were crazy. We even did a few 'hak'movements on stage, the Russians were very fond of it.

What is the weirdest thing ever happened to you during a performance?

At Subsonik, just before we had to perform, Thijs started rope skipping with his jumper, and then his arm was twitched. He had to go to the doctor but a while later he appeared again with his arm in a sling, and he even played some music after all. During that set we played a tune with very loud basses in the break, then someone shouted very loud: 'vadsig!' (Literally: 'indolent', as in: 'this stuff is crazy!') That was kind of funny as wel..

In Moscow we had to hide behind the turntables, not until the MC was ready introducing us, we were allowed to come up again.

Is there something special thing you do before performing, except for rope skipping?

We drink one or two alcoholic drinks, and that's it.

Who are your three most favourite producers and DJ's from Holland and abroad?

Dutch producers:

1. BSE
2. Falcon & Chase
3. MAV

Foreign producers:

1. Gridlok
2. Teebee
3. Phace

Dutch DJ's:

Josje
Minds Connect
BSE
Chase
Silvahfonk

Foreign DJ's:

Ed Rush
Teebee
Profit
Fierce
Mayhem

What do you think of DnBforum.nl?

Well, we are a little bit in a little corner concerning DnB, we are not typical listeners anymore, so DnBforum has another meaning for us now, but it has done a lot for the Dutch DnB-scene, a very good institution!

Imagine: you are organising a party, and you're financial means are, let's say, sufficient. Who would be on the flyer?

The Thijs-room:

Noisia
Phace
Optiv
Teebee
MC Liquid

The Nik-room :

Desimal (live)
Mayhem
Ed Rush
BSE
MC Jay

The Martijn-room:

Gridlok
Pendulum
Universal Project
D-Bridge
MC P.A.T.

Lounge-room:

MAV
Scientific Live
Electro Soul System

VJ's: Benaan, Eztetics, Giraffe Toast

Do you earn money, by producing music?

Yes, but not enough to eat at our favorite restaurant every day.

What's happening with the USA-tour?

Thijs has been touring the US for 5 weeks in our name.

How do co operations between producers work in your case?

To give an example: Thijs and Martijn had to perform in Budapest. We flew from Cologne where Phace lives. Before that, we had already written a tune with Phace by way of the internet, by constantly sending the project to one another (Dr. Strangelove on Subtitles). Nik also went to Cologne, and wrote during the two days Thijs and Martijn were in Budapest, two other tunes together with Phace (Outsource and Surface Tension on Subtitles). When Martijn and Thijs came back, they helped with a couple of things and then they were ready.

We also had some friends from Brighton UK coming over twice, with them we made Wasteland (Payload) and Timechaser (Shadow-Law). We also invited Mayhem three times and that resulted in Tomahawk (Nerve), untitled (citrus), a tune with mayhem and pacific- centipod (oBSEssions) and a couple of other things from which it is still uncertain what will happen with it. During this kind of co operations a lot of beers and smoking equipment are used, in fact they are wild orgies of booze, drugs and Drum'n'Bass, and we always end up with tracks we would normally never have dared to make. Working together is always fun and inspiring because certain boundaries are broken (not only musically) and some demands are made which are not existing in normal life.

Which DJ's play your tunes?

Teebee, Andy C, Dj Ink, Dom & Roland, Calyx, AK1200, Simon Bassline Smith, Kemal, Cause 4 Concern, BSE, Pendulum, Chris Su, Stakka, Concord Dawn, Skynet, Dreazz, Gridlok, Pan, Evol Intent and Mayhem amongst others.

What can we expect from you this year?

We continue producing, we hope we'll have many performances, and there are a couple of things which are waiting to be released.
