Basicly what you need ar a sub, mid and tweeter speaker, a 3-way crossover, acousticly well-balanced wood (MDF or cherry are known to be good). And some insight in how to build an "acoustic chamber" that will make the speakerbox actually add to the quality of the speakers you use.
You could take a look at www.speakerplans.com to get you started.
Building your own poweramp is somewhat more difficult but possible. I know a little something about electricity/electronics (studied that) so if you would have any questions on that just ask.

edit: oops friscko glacé beat me to that speakerplans link Tongue

I think dillinja & lemon visited speakerplans when they were building the soundsystem.
I've seen that some speakers from the system really look like those on speakerplans.

you can't build your own woofers, or tweeters, you can buy them everywhere!
at stores where they sell eminence, fane, jb-systems,.....
bought my FANE COLOSSUS 18" BASSWOOFERs online, putted them in one of the "kasten" I was building, and now I got 2 huge subs

so what about the amount of Watt?
let's say I would build a 2-way speaker with 2 300W woofers and one 250W tweeter. Have I created a 850W speaker or doesn't it work like that?

Oh yeah, if someone knows something about different kinds of woofers, subs, tweeters, about different labels, which are the good ones? the bad ones? the cheapest, the more expensive ones? I would like to know.
