It's totally worth it, I paid 900€ for a computer that would have cost maybe about 1500€ if I had not built it myself.

You can just walk into any shop that specializes in computers and ask for a free recommendation in your price range. And if that offer is good you can buy the package the person in the shop has just given you..
Hope you understood, my English isn't too super

Here's a list that I slapped together in 10 minutes. This is a good PC for producing. Just the basic setup, you'll need to add in a sound card etc according to your own taste and budget.
Case: Antec Sonata III 500 - lots of room for drives and cards, very good PSU, noise absorbing materials
Motherboard: Asus P6T - got the works: support for 6 hard drives, 12 usb ports, 2 firewire ports etc
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 - fast and cheap
Memory: Kingston ValueRAM KVR1066D3N7K3/6G - 6 gigs triple channel
Graphics card: Asus ENGT220/DI/1GD2 - cheap but decent graphics card
Hard disks: 2x Western Digital Caviar Black WD1001FALS - two reliable and fast drives, totalling 2 terabyte
If you really need it you can add a DVD-writer and even a floppy drive. Keep your current screen, keyboard and mouse.
This setup costs about 850-900 € when you buy the components in a good webshop and in my opinion gives a lot of power for the price.
