I am sick of programming hihat lines that are staccato, or very short, loads of attack and plenty of silence in between. I really am looking for that sound that is almost a constant sizzle in the high frequencies...
How do I achieve this? I have tried distortions and reverbs, delays, compression; I just cant make my hihats sound like a constant high frequency sound with a solid groove.
If you're not sure what I mean, I can provide some examples...
no rules, not much to say except experiment with reverb and distortion. play around the chain of fx (order of fx). cutting the low end off goes without saying
first you gotta have good samples, recommend using combinations of rides, crashes cymbals etc, everything with a lot of harmonics and going on about finding the right adsr values ( if I understood properly, you want them to just stay on without actually hitting)
the way it is done in (not only) jazz is that the drummer instead of sticks uses brushes. which is what youre doing basically, by taking out the attack.
yeah as mentioned distortion and reverb, any kind of tube distortion will add a lot of depth to a hat used with a nice reverb with the tails nicely endin before the next hat comes in. then tweak really, just keep trying stuff out. adding stereo widening of some sort canhelp too
@battledrone lol at your sig they get more and more informative/entertaining
I had done some sampling of jazz drummers catching the ride and/or crash with the brushes (about which Cynik writes). Then added a bit of stereo enhancer (phase delay). It gave a nice airy feeling.
