when i do a lot of dark ambience, i will sample songs. something atmospheric, like lord of the ring OST or phil collins or some sort of ambient techno song, and then STREEEEEEEEEEEECH it out like 10x over, and it comes out full timber. make nice dark pad for industrial stuff.

Same as me. Really enjoy doing remixes, but I tend to stretch a hat or vocal part and use some delay and reverb to make a pad. Or cut a bass to make a short sharp phud! Hardly ever use the original sample as they were intended
I like making my own sounds, but I know nothing about synthesis, so most of my own synths are a bit hit and miss.
I mainly use Vst's for basses, leads, atmos and rest except drums, also use roland for all above. Samples are handy for fx and other wierd shit or vocals obviously. Sometimes even process vst live with some fx, my cpu handling it quite alright of course you got to be resonable.Use Cubase sx with reason,acid and vst under.
why is it whats noobish about using samples :S i mean fair enough using samples from samplepacks such as piano loops is a bit noobish, but i am starting too hunt my own samples out and its really an inspiring process, even when i been findin these samples i never leave as is and always try to change em into something more suited to my needs and at the end of the day if you synthesise everythin your gonna end up with a synthetic soundin tune, imo dnb is quite organic sounding
most producers have their own mix of synthesized sounds from scratch and processed samples in their tunes, i don't see the problem tbh - just make music! (as someone mentioned earlier)

I got my own base of sampled various synths which is ever expanding, as wenenever I can get a hold of one. never bought any synths myself ever

I put on my steel toe-cap boots, walk the streets of London with a mini disc recorder and kick various sized tramps/cats/dogs and sometimes music producers who give a fuck WHERE a good sample comes from
because.....
using VST's/ hardware is so....
